Canada’s government hopes to welcome nearly 1.5 million immigrants by 2025 to fill critical jobs and cram them into cities. It's something business leaders have long been pushing for. In a sparsely populated country, foreign labour is allowed to compete with the local population, which keep wages down to maintain the status quo. This decision by the federal government tells you that rising expenses will continue to rise.

Most of these new immigrants will be competing for blue collar jobs, as the system does not recognize foreign credentials. The only ones content with life in Canada will the new comers escaping third world conditions to work in better conditions in Canada. That's what the government and corporations want. Grateful, obedient taxable servants.
Anonymous on Jan 28, 2023:
Moving to Toronto will make you regret that decision, and make you hate every day of your life living there.

The exception is if you are wealthy and are coming to buy up rental properties to leech off the labor of the working class.

Toronto is a utopia if you are coming for rent-seeking profiteering and own assets.

If you're coming here with nothing, you will exist and die with nothing.

Why is there so many acts of violence on the TTC? Are Canadians suffering economic and social malaise that the teens are acting out because they see no future in Toronto unless they are already wealthy?

Terrible place.

Terrible people.

This past weekend in Toronto 8 girls aged 13 to 16 stabbed to death a 59 yr old man. A complete stranger to them. They met through social media. Their identities will be protected and the maximum sentence they can get is 3 years. After that they can attend school with your kids or provide care to your elderly parents. These are the people in your neighborhood. If you move here

If you’re a single male budget for female companionship which starts from $400 per hour. The male-female interaction is monetized in Toronto.

Lived in Toronto for 30 years. Would not recommend it

Huge city with plenty of people and money, but potential is always wasted. This is a city which decided to run a parkway along the lake instead of having a nice public waterfront

Concrete hellhole. If you have any travelling experience at all, there is nothing to see in Toronto in terms of sights or architecture. Everything is ugly concrete, chrome, glass

Infrastructure is not maintained properly. Internet and power frequently go out like a third world country and the local hydro and telecoms severely understaff the repair teams so things stay down forever

People are awful. The population of Toronto consists entirely of assholes, pretentious hipsters, and finance industry suits

Traffic is terrible. The most congested highway in North America is in Toronto. Everyone drives like a lunatic

Insanely expensive. Rent is expensive, food is expensive, metro is expensive ... I heard a recent study found Toronto is now more expensive than NYC

Toronto is the Mouse Utopia experiment by John Calhoun.

We are entering a stage where the local birth rates are falling, and to prevent a collapse in the pension funds, Toronto has to import more wage serfs to pay taxes and rent for the older Canadians who are retired.

Toronto is a scam and a Ponzi scheme.
Rick on Nov 23, 2022:
Warning prospective immigrants of the challenges they are bound to face in Canada doesn't change anything. Those already living in slums and conflict ridden regions of the world don't care about skyrocketing expenses and taxes. Do you think the Punjabis are concerned about these matters? These people are used to being poor, so Canada is a dramatic improvement.

Canada does not attract the best and this has long term consequences. Skilled immigrants leave after some time because they have OPTIONS while the money launderers, drug lords and refugees stay.

The federal government's plan to increase the number of immigrants entering Canada, with a goal of bringing in 500,000 people does not help anyone if the only people coming here are taxable subservient automatons. Canada is slipping in the global index of livability due to the quality of people it attracts.

The Canadian Embassies and immigration consultants lie to foreigners that Toronto is a utopia.

Many Canadians want to leave Toronto and those who bought real estate early are cashing out and retiring abroad.
Anonymous on Nov 18, 2022:
The starting wage for newcomers is C$2,000 a month after tax working full time. Deduct C$150 a month for a TTC metropass.

Rent for a one bedroom in Toronto these days are almost C$2,000 a month.

A two bedroom will set you back at least C$2,300 a month and if you have a spouse and a few children a three bedroom goes for C$2,500 or more a month.

You have to pay for your own electricity.
John on Nov 11, 2022:
Hello,

I couldn’t help but notice that the landed gentry are now encouraging people to sell their homes to pay Toronto rent aka the landlord’s mortgage.

After the government is hindering growth in resource extraction, I guess the Canadian government is turning to rent extraction and rent seeking to fill the gap.

I’m not poor in India so I can bear climate change which isn’t going to happen overnight.
Again, what benefit is there for me to up and leave my middle class life in India, to live in a moldy basement and pay rent that pays for someone else’s mortgage and makes them richer?
I’d be a fool to do that. Canada sounds like they need us to fulfill their budget deficit. Scam!
Yang on Nov 10, 2022:
India will be underwater in ten years and will become a bad place to live in.

You should sell your home in India and come to Canada.

The government is ensuring that we reach a million immigrants a year by 2030.

There are plenty of basement suites that you can rent from a local Canadian and you will feel safer in Canada.

We need immigrants. We need a lot of you to come here NOW.
Akash Deo on Nov 10, 2022:
The immigration consultant told me that Canada needs Investment Bankers, but I’ve been applying for jobs using my friend’s

Canadian address and there is no reply. However I am getting calls from temp agencies to work in warehouses for minimum wage.

Why should I sell my home to pay another man’s mortgage and rent until I die in Canada?

Think paying $2,000 a month plus electricity for a cockroach-infested one bedroom apartment at a faraway borough in Toronto is bad? Just wait until these snowflake-pandering Trudeaus start flooding the country with more and more people to serve as consumers for the corporations.

You will be waiting hours in line to pay for your groceries, waiting years to see a family doctor, waiting days at the emergency, paying sky-high rents because there is no choice than to freeze, and wages being driven to the ground because there will be tens of thousands of applicants for a minimum wage job.

Thank your politicians and the elites for transforming Toronto into one giant Ponzi scheme for the rich.

@Rick:

That is why a lot of Canadians are becoming landlords and lobbying the government to increase immigration numbers to bring in more rent serfs to make the Landlord class richer.

The majority of politicians are also Landlords and own rental investments do they want to bring in more rent serfs in Canada while ignoring the healthcare, housing and job market crisis.

It’s C$2,000 or more a month to rent a one bedroom in Toronto these days. Minimum wage is C$15 per hour.

Earning more in Canada makes no difference. The more you earn, the more you lose in taxes.

The majority of newcomers in Toronto work for minimum wage which is C$30,000 a year before taxes.
Those earning over C$100,000 a year are cops, teachers, and politicians who benefit from exploitation of immigrants to work for minimum wage in factories.

A few in the comments quoted the average salary is <50k annually or just over 3,000 after tax in Toronto. This is blatantly false. The reported median wage includes many that are students or are simply not looking for a job. Given that there are around 1 million full time workers in the city of Toronto, the 2021 census actually showed that 240,000 in Toronto earned >100k in 2020, and the actual median full time salary is over 65k. Current estimated average monthly salary: 4,200 after tax is pretty much on point. That being said, still can't afford a 1BD apartment in downtown Toronto with this salary.

Toronto is the land of shattered dreams for many newcomers.

The consultants abroad lie to prospective immigrants about the cost of living and job market.

By the time many newcomers realized that Toronto is a Ponzi scheme and a ripoff, they are too broke to return and restart their lives.

Money laundering is a booming industry in Canada. Despite the exorbitant cost of living and massive taxes, who is still moving to Canada? Only money launderers and desperate people from impoverished countries come here in great numbers. Ask yourself why would a smart person move to Canada only to lose all their savings and live from hand to mouth for the rest of their life with 8 months of bone chilling winter most of the year? Moving to Canada is an upgrade only if you're living in literal slums of India or some wor-torn middle-east dictatorship.

Julia, Rogers and John Tory the Mayor of Toronto want a steady supply of consumers to land on the shores of Canada.

That is how the Rogers family became rich. They become richer when there is a mass movement of the middle class from Asia to Toronto.

The corporations also benefit from a larger supply of wage slaves who are afraid to demand higher wages and benefits.

The REITs also benefit from creating more demand for their cockroach infested apartments and jacking up the price for rentals.

Toronto is one giant PONZI SCHEME and modern-day plantation with horrible cold weather.
Julia on Oct 08, 2022:
Dear CBC,

There is a housing crisis in Toronto. I saw a video of Toronto Police kicking down the tents of the homeless encampments and kicking both homeless and protesters. Why fund police who appear to protect and serve the elite class?

As a European, I fully well know the implications of inequality when I see it.

The City of Toronto claims that it doesn't have money to increase welfare rates and low income housing, yet they have money to increase the police budget every year.

Crime is considered low in Toronto compared to other cities. Why fund the police who are only being dispatched to enact violence on the poor and homeless?

The City of Toronto also has a privileged Man who has connections to the elites such as being a consultant for the Rogers family. These politicians don't appear to act in the interest of anyone in the bottom 80 percentile of income.

Low wages (lucky if you make 50 k BEFORE tax) to rent a one bed room it’s 2300$ a month, insurance is 300 a month for a car if your lucky. (You can forgot public transport it very slow and 30 years behind the times) traffic is horrible even at 11 at night, always full of cars on the highway driving slow and blocking peoples from passing In the left lanes, not much entertainment in this cities( who can afford it anyway). Peoples are very rude and self centred, it’s all about money and rushing everywhere like a chicken with there head cut off. Not many amenities for a city of 7 million peoples. It’s like paying Manhattan rent prices but having the amenities of some rust belt city like Cleveland. You also get to live in frozen shut weather for more then half the year.
Paula on Sep 29, 2022:
Toronto has a homeless crisis. More and more persons are living in tents. It’s despicable, scary and horrific.

A job doesn’t guarantee shelter in Toronto.

And when you live in a tent, the propertied class send Toronto Police to kick down the tents and kick the homeless people like garbage. The videos are on social media.

Right now it’s over $900 for a SHARED ROOM in Toronto. It’s a dystopian nightmare.

Good paying jobs are also hard to find. Don’t be fooled with the propertied class because they live a life of privilege, went to good schools and have connections to the good jobs.

Some of my Gen Z friends feel like their deaths are getting closer because they are trapped in Toronto and can’t afford to leave.

Homelessness is rising in Toronto, even for those who have jobs.

The Canadian Dream has turned into a nightmare for the working class.

There is a cost of living crisis and a homeless crisis that the politicians are refusing to act on quickly, except one Trump junior politician who is gaining popularity.

Trudeau openly planned to increase the PR quotas to almost 500,000 this year and rent prices in Toronto are crazy!

A 2-bedroom apartment goes for over $2,000 in Scarbrough and North York!

Is this the future you want your children to inherit? To live like serfs? Canada is becoming too expensive to live in, and the wages are barely covering inflation.
Anonymous on Sep 24, 2022:
That $5,000 average salary after tax is a statistical error, or deliberately fabricated. The median wage is about $3,000 a month.

For example: If 1 CEO/Manager earns $99,000 and the 99 workers earn $1,000 a month, that is $100,000 divided by 100 which gets you the average of $10,000 a month.

In Toronto, you have the elites who earn over $1M a month, the bureaucratic class who earn between $5,000 to $10,000 a month, the declining middle class, and then you have the working poor class who earn less than $2,000 a month full time.

The majority of newcomers in Toronto WILL NOT start off with a $5,000 a month after-tax salary. That is what Vice Principals and Managers in the public sector earn in Toronto.

The job agency starts off newcomers with minimum wage which is $2,000 after taxes and deductions.

Rent for a one-bedroom is climbing at $1,800 a month or more. You certainly can't live off $200 a month in Toronto because food is expensive and there appears to be price gouging at the moment.

Unless you are fleeing war and are desperate, I wouldn't advise anyone in the emerging economies to quit their middle class jobs and relocate to Toronto to work in factories and pay rent to the elites.
Anonymous on Sep 22, 2022:
The standard of life in Toronto is eroding while the elites buy more properties that the working class pay high rents for.

Home ownership is unattainable in Toronto. International students are paying $1,000 s month to share a bunk bed with several other students.

Working full time does not guarantee that you will get to rent an apartment, hence a homeless crisis that the Toronto Police is trying to sweep under the rug using violence.

The economic, financial, and personal finance/cost of living factors mentioned here are so true and long known facts, but I'm going to mention the driving. My goodness, the city and region is one confused mess. The amount of driving done here is equivalent to the driving for the RURAL haha. Not for a city! A real (developed) city is one where places are accessible and there are lots of methods to get around. Toronto and many Canadian urban places have serious growing up to do!

The average net monthly salary after tax is listed here as 5,053.27 CAD. This is not correct, although it is how much an average family would expect to earn with two full-time workers. Perhaps this number has been skewed by IT workers migrating to mid-level roles in the city.

According to the 2016 Canadian census, median after-tax income for Toronto residents was 2,435.83 CAD (29,242 CAD annually). The average annual wage increase has been below 3% during this time.

The median after-tax income in 2022 is LESS THAN 3,000.00 CAD.

Cost of living, wages not aligned with CEO prices, severely bloated housing prices, mass immigration, traffic congestion non-stop, outdated and puny infrastructure, bureaucracy, suffering from the woke disease, etc. Meanwhile, Canada as a whole is beyond emergency alert but it's a place on life support. It doesn't help that its own gov't abuses its citizens and taxes, and ignores their own Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

A 20-year fixed mortgage doesn't exist. Closest is 25 yr at 8.75% according to ratehub. 10 year is around 4.25%; so 20 year would be at least 7%. Numbeo currently has it at 2.85 for a 20-year fixed mortgage which is wildly inaccurate.

I totally agree with Anonymous on Mar 24, 2022. I have spent yrs before could I enter Canada with 2 master degrees (one from the UK),19 yrs of job experience, my score was not high enough, so I started to learn French and it took me a lot of time and effort to get a high score in TEF Canada exam and in this process I have seen many people from my own country with absolutely no knowledge of English or French just simply entered Canada on a tourist visa and became refugees. Many of them are even rich in their homeland and here they receive monthly salary from the Canadian government. This is sad and deeply disappointing.

The city is counting on you to pay a large land transfer tax. Otherwise current homeowners will pay more. And how will all those developers afford a Lamborghini or Ferrari for their kids? Stop thinking of your own future and your own family and mindlessly apply to move here you brainless sheep!

today work began on the controversial new Ontario subway line. If people return to the downtown core to work we need another huge construction project other to get them in and out. if they don't go back property values downtown will decline. And construction (traditionally a cyclical industry) may suffer a slowdown which it hasn't seen since the early 1990's. Toronto's economy is looking more like a house of cards. Look at how IT jobs are leaving California for Texas and Arizona. Or maybe I'm wrong and the average detached house will be $5 million in 5 years. Can you afford to move here?

Hey Mr./Ms. Anonymous (who are afraid of introducing yourself even with a fake name!), your comment is so racist.

If you’re so dumb and self righteous that you don’t know and understand that at least Canadian economy is rolling because of immigrants, then you’re probably Ford 2.0!

To enlighten you a little, immigrants have to show prove of income and savings and bring at least a year worth of all expenses for each family member upon arrival. They are merely selected amongst the best in terms of knowledge and profession yet have to start (and more often than not stay) with entry level jobs. “Canadian experience”, rings a bell?

Job market, as well documented, is arranged in a way that wouldn’t allow newcomers in unless exploited in lowest possible positions so guys like you (maybe) climb the ladder faster.

And, no matter what, they have to pay taxes on what they make and once again on what they buy! No wonder why government is so fond of immigration!

As for residents though, housing quadrupled meaning money directly in your pocket! Rental housing is ridiculously and inhumanly unaffordable which pushes newcomers to so called basements with no proper lighting and so… to make you some passive income! Yahyyy

It wasn’t even 15 years ago that no luxury cars were ramping on Toronto streets. Look now. Whose are these? If immigrants, so they brought wealth to your country. If Canadians, where from? Right, exploiting immigrants.

Take care buddy and think!

What else could you write in here? Whats your skills and degree that caused you think you got rich from your smartness and hardworking? Not from boot licking.

All the complaints here, is not related to laziness, Mr. Know it all. Is related to your system. All the the recent immigrants in Canada and US are very smart and hardworking, they know different languages and have lots of skills, but you and your boss here in the system are corrupt and stupid enough that they could not understand this fact, or may be better for their pockets to say selfish statements like yours.

Canada & North America are like kingdom of ladies, legally its supposed to have equality of men n women, but practically men would be treated like slaves. Why??? Cause they want to take advantage of men to force them to prosper the economy, the capitalists pockets, to make more products or services, or to help economy,

Why they encourage directly or indirectly, to encourage people come here to live in one bedroom or shared room , while they have billions of lands to make more apartments for coming immigrants? Why most knowledgeable and supper educated entrepreneurs should work as construction worker ,plumbers, painters, roofers , Uber drivers, bus drivers, cashiers, Or in wallmart, etc,
Corporations making billions, and staff’s earning around minimum wage?

Why insurance is so expensive? Why these expensive corporations do not pay when customer get some damage?

Why the government doesn’t subsidize anything here to help their residents ??

Why one MRI takes around one year for a person with any sort of disease?

Why they are killing native people in USA, Canada, Australia for years and years and years? And in the media you guys try to show yourself as a human?? You need to go inside any jungle in the world to see that lion eats when S/he is hungry. You are not hungry but killing people around the world for the sake of your pocket,

Why your companies or organizations have lots of unreasonable process?

Why your systems, the whole society a system, are failing over n over??

North American systems has failed for, decades, that s why China, Russia and other powerful countries are here, in North America,

A toxic, broken and confused place. Even the country. A big part of this is the govt they currently have - all levels. They are a towns kind of place, but cannot handle more or the bigger levels. This place couldn't get their priorities straight before pandemic, during this pandemic, and for sure won't get their priorities straightened out in the future either. They proved it and did it to themselves to confirm this reputation. No thank you!

Canadian government depends heavily upon cheap labor to fatten their own private financial portfolios. The doors remain open to any and all foreigners from 3rd world countries or below that.Five billion usd went missing mysteriously several months ago but Trudeau won't comment. He along with other high ranking members in government has sunk Canada's economy.Canada enjoys bashing the U S every chance they get.But the consequences of that are grim especially since the Ford plant is the largest employer in Canada and congress is talking about putting heavy tarrifs on anything made at the Ford plant in Canada. Basically putting Ford out of business in Canada is the motivation and Ford in the U S is worried about it.

canadian immigration is a fraud. You pay thousands of bucks to apply for study permit/work permit/permanent residence to come to canada, and you end up paying a huge rent in a tiny basement room with two other poor guys/girls in large city such as Toronto/Vancouver. Company are asking for your Canadian experience the moment you start to apply for your first job and you get rejected again and again. Huge amount of people with a bachelor/master/phd degree become cheap labor as a uber driver/walmart cashier. Don't come to Canada! Stay in your own country! At least you have some decency to stay and work in your own country.

I was almost a victim of Canada's legal system when I lived in Toronto.

Girlfriend suddenly wants to move in and get on my benefits from work.

A close friend of mine at work hears me talking about this and she tells me about the Ontario spousal laws and warns me that I'm being setup for financial rape.

I end the relationship a day later.

In her angry breakup email she states how she is going to come after me for my pension.

LOL

Guys.. you just can't ever get married or live with them anymore, that time over until the system is fixed. Toronto is a city for the 1%ers who live in Bridle Path and Lawrence Park. Toronto females hate men with a vengeance, and the police treat men like slaves.

Or.. we all seriously need to go line up and get government ID stating we are all women.

Its only one small aspect of the city

but does anyone else notice the issue the downtown has with a perpetual smell of garbage and sewage?

Every time I visit Toronto (admittedly usually just commuting in from the burbs for a Jays game) the stench is just brutal. Ive been to pretty much every big city in North America, and none of them have a problem with this on par with Toronto. New York was pristine and hygenic last year.

Its probably driven by that sewer line theyve been working on for what feels like a decade in front of Union station, but the amount of trash on the street is pretty extreme in some places too
