I have spent most my time in old town Montpellier but yesterday I took the tram line 1 to Mousson and Tram Line 3 to the opposite end at Lattes. I wandered through the Middle Eastern market in Mousson and had zero negative reports of staring (like what are you doing here?), impolite gestures or speech. In fact, it was opposite, I felt welcomed. Lattes is very much a well to do community so I did not stay. In the 7 days, I have only been accosted by same woman beggar twice, asking for food in front of same boullangerie. There are canvassers at Opera square who are more aggressive and tried to stop me but I keep walking.
The old town section have streets closed off to regular cars by steel pillons that can be raised and lowered for authorised persons or permanent concretd columns. I have seen groups of 4 armed (pistols only) making their rounds and stopping into shops to check if all was good. It provides some comfort knowing they are around. I have walked back to rental apartment in old town at 10PM after dinner and never felt uneasy. Never once have I felt unsafe at any small streets, day or night. Last evening I walked along the aquaduct in Arc eaux and felt safe. I have not seen for-rent (e-)bicycles or e-scooters abandoned randomly in alley, in bushes or sidewalks. I saw pedestrians walking across streets and cars stopping for them even if it was not at cross walk. What I have observed is the old town is mostly university age or slightly older people/tourists and elderly residents who are very respectful. When people are talking, they are not loud, they are respectful of others around them not needing to hear their personal conversations. I feel and think that respectful mindset is missing in my hometown of Seattle, where I do not even want to go to downtown or Pioneer Square during the day.
I spent 2 weeks in Nice before coming to Montpellier and I will choose to live in Montpellier even though I also felt safe in Nice.
