Mangaluru is completely depleted of greenery. Plenty of apartments have come up, and trees are very very few within the city. Plenty of vehicles and old private buses are also there. Electric buses are non-existent. The riversides, beaches and parks are strewn with plastic bags.
The heat and humidity are extremely high in Mangaluru due to plenty of apartments, narrow concrete roads and vehicles, and absence of greenery, trees and gardens.
Water scarcity and electricity scarcity is there over here. There are no desalination plants installed in Mangaluru to purify sea water.

Kudla Mangalore is below Karnataka's Ghatta. Kudremukha Betta is the nearest Ghatta point to Kudla. Kolar Gold Fields is the furthest easternmost Karnataka Ghatta point from Kudla. Beyond KGF, the plains of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh begin.
We Kudla folks below the Ghatta never use blankets or Kambali. But on top of Ghatta, folks always use Kambali blankets. It is very hard to wake up early in the morning on top of Ghatta due to cold smog.
But in Kudla the sultry weather will wake us up.

Mangalore is the best city in india, clean and less pollution
Prasanna on Dec 09, 2023:
Seeing some of the comments about a straight line highway to Kudremukh, I really think it's not at all necessary. The climate around Baramelu, Aladangadi abd Guruvayankere right below the Kudremukh mountain in Mangalore DK district is very pleasant throughout the year, thanks to dense forests and canopy. Putting large scale infrastructure and highways in this place to Kudremukh will increase the heat, pollution and consequently spoil the calm, serene, cool environment.
Just take a look at how hot the Coorg district including Madikeri and also the city of Mangalore have become due to deforestation. Such amount of deforestation is not at all needed at the Mangalore DK district and Chikmagalur district meeting point places near the Western Ghats.
Plenty of concrete roads and apartments, vehicle traffic congestion leading to the wiping out of forests in the city of Mangalore have lead to the vast increase in temperature, throughout the day and night.

There is unbearable stinking fish smell throughout day and night in Mangaluru. It is mostly because of fish-meal industries. Fish meal industries and fish oil factories in Mangaluru are run illegally and they are causing plenty of respiratory problems, suffocation and lack of sleep to the nearby localities and residents. It is high time that all the fish-meal industries and fish-oil industries in Mangaluru are banned permanently and shut-down as soon as possible.
Anonymous on Sep 30, 2023:
Mangaluru is smelling fish everywhere. The stinking repulsive fish smell from the fish meal industries and dry fish processing factories are making this town into an unlivable place. We can't even breathe air properly. The southern parts of Mangaluru has stinking fish smell throughout the day.
The fish meal industries at Ullal and their illegal unhygienic release of pollutants and stinking rotten fish smell are never a concern for the local politicians and administrators. They are hand-in-glove with the local Ullal "Peaceful Community" that are operating these extremely stinking illegal fish meal industries. Mangaluru people are suffering and have already got respiratory diseases due to this unbearable stinking fish smell.

It is high time that all the private buses inside Mangalore are abolished.
These private buses in Mangalore are the worst road transport you will find in the entire country. These private buses in Mangalore are known for rash driving, all these buses are dented, these engines are not following any standards and norms, these busses cause immense air pollution and noise pollution. These Mangalore private buses don't even have doors, they don't have GPS stop, next stop announcements and they don't even wait for passengers to get down. The private bus authority don't even have website, helpline number and app to track buses. These private buses in Mangalore don't even have a proper bus stand. There is no roof and no proper terminals and no customer care staff. These private buses are parked in the road and they cause plenty of road accidents. The private buses in Mangalore are the worst in the world.

The Government buses in Karnataka are very good. They are now giving free travel to women. The Government buses have doors, GPS stop announcements, website, app, helpline number and online tracking. The Government buses follow the engine norms and emission guidelines. The Government bus stands and terminals in Karnataka are very good.

It is high time the Government city buses get introduced with electric buses and let them be the only bus transport service in Mangalore. All the private buses in Mangalore should be permanently abolished.

The temperature and pollution are soaring in Mangaluru. People burst crackers during many days throughout the night during those Kola celebrations. The vehicles are plenty in Mangaluru. The smoke released by private buses here are not monitored and reprimanded.

Trees are cut down, and Mangaluru does not have tree-lined roads and massive parks within the city limits. This is contrary to Bengaluru and Thiruvananthapuram - both these cities have plenty of tree-lined roads. The roads in Mangaluru are not grid-patterned. The temperature in Mangaluru city is increasing due to deforestation, more private vehicles, more concrete buildings and concrete roads, and smoke released by petrochemical industries. The temperature has risen sharply this year: https://www.daijiworld.com/news/newsDisplay?newsID=1054302
Hence people are not concerned about having more tree-lined roads, parks and gardens in Mangaluru.

I am now settled in Perth, Australia.
I don't think India and its cities and towns are anywhere close to being considered clean and least polluted. India is among the most dirtiest and most polluted places in the world. All the cities of India are filthy. The roads and traffic sense in India is awful. The roads across Indian cities have plastic bags strewn everywhere, open sewers, horns, dust and open littering.
Australia is very clean and has the best air quality, good water quality, and the best quality of life in the world. People in Perth are very disciplined, they keep the public places very clean. You won't find even a single piece of paper thrown in the public places in Perth. Air quality is the best in the world, AQI at Perth never exceeds 5. In India even its least polluted city has AQI of 70!
Traffic sense is very disciplined at Perth, people follow rules, the sky on clear sunny days is beautiful blue without any air pollution. The infrastructure at Perth is excellent, and so are its people.
People in India boast about environmentalists and saving nature instead of infrastructure. But India is pathetic in terms of infrastructure, pollution, sanitation, traffic sense and discipline.
Forgive me for being honest and frank, I am glad I have moved out of India and never wish to return back to this filthy sub-continent.

I am from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. When I think of Mangalore, the picture that comes to my mind are of beaches, nearby hill stations, rivers and religious places.
Just like the other people have mentioned, I only wish for better infrastructure and job opportunities, a place free from pollution and improved sanitation and planning.

Adding onto what others have said, apart from beaches, quick connectivity to Kudremukh mountain from Mangalore has to be a top priority for great tourism and leisure. The reason is that Mangalore has been stereotyped as a hot and warm place by Karnataka and everyone else. But the irony is that Kudremukh mountain that is the tallest mountain in Karnataka is only at a distance of 45 km if a straight highway is constructed from there to Mangalore city. Kudremukh is the tallest mountain in Karnataka jointly sharing that spot with Mullayanagiri. Kudremukh mountain is easily the nearest hill station to Mangalore.
The real irony is that Kudremukh mountain is the coldest place in Karnataka. At the top of Kudremukh in January mornings, the temperature can drop to 0°C. There is no IMD official weather measuring station up there. Although Mangalore is the warmest place in Karnataka on average, Kudremukh mountain is Karnataka's coldest place and most pleasant in summer. It is very sad that politicians, administrators and people have ignored direct highway from Mangalore to ascend the Kudremukh mountain. Kudremukh peak is arguably the most underrated place in Karnataka.
In fact in terms of chill climate and pleasant weather, none of these places are anywhere near comparable to Kudremukh - they include the overhyped weather of Bangalore, Coorg, Mysore, Belgaum, Dharwad, Hassan, Kolar and Chikmagalur town. Kudremukh is by far more pleasant and cooler than these overrated places.

If the infrastructure and job opportunities are augmented and boosted in Mangalore, then it will be the best place to live in India.

The Indian Media and Politicians are to be blamed for their propaganda in portraying Mangalore for fake communal incidents and fake intolerance. I had worked in Mangalore for 7 years in a software company and I know the reality.

Pollution can be reduced if the private vehicles usage is mitigated and public transport usage is maximized.
Chaminda Panjurli Rai on Jan 24, 2023:
Mangalore is a very polluted place that needs plenty of sanitation improvements and reduction of traffic, vehicles and air pollution and water pollution. My native place is Kudremukh and I stayed at Aladangadi. I wish there is direct road from Aladangadi to Kudremukh. All existing roads to Kudremukh take a long U-turn through Karkala.
Mangalore needs to improve a lot on outdoor cleanliness.
Gotabhaya Shetty on Oct 16, 2022:
Mangaluru is a highly polluted place. All the Highways, Railways, Airport and Seaport in Mangaluru are the most worst quality. The traffic in Mangaluru is extremely high. The concrete roads are increasing the urban heat island effect. Mangaluru has no job opportunities for educated people.
S Deshpande on Dec 19, 2021:
Pollution is on the rise in Mangalore because of more vehicles, very poor planning and more petrochemical, fishmeal and iron ore industries. Lack of greenery and trees is a worrying aspect. As Mahendra correctly pointed out, the National Highways connecting Mangalore are mostly single lane and resemble the Moon's surface at many places. Railways and tabletop airport here are dangerous and miserable. The private buses are awful and cause plenty of pollution. The bus infrastructure is very poor in Mangalore. Vehicle parking facilities are also very poor.
Mahendra on Dec 18, 2021:
Mangalore is highly polluted place with no planning, no trees beside the roadsides. People are not concerned about cultivating more gardens. Rivers here are highly polluted. Even the roads are not laid in grid patterns.
All the national highways and railway lines heading eastward from Mangalore towards Sakleshpur-Hassan, Davangere, Mysore, Hubli are the worst. Many national highway stretches are single lane and worse than moon craters. The NHAI, PWD, Indian Railways and DGCA are highly corrupt bodies headed by worst union ministers. Mangalore people are fools to vote for the Central Government and also the useless State Government. The airport, infrastructure, networks, utilities, highways, railways are worst in Mangalore. All the politicians and journalists of India are corrupt and terrible. Mangalore's tabletop airport is highly dangerous. Air pollution is very bad at many areas inside the CBD area, Nanthoor and Panambur.
Prajna Kumari on Dec 07, 2021:
I am working as a nurse presently in Sheffield, UK. I am on a winter tour back to Mangalore. All I can say is that Mangalore's infrastructure is terrible. The highways are worst and most highways are single lane roads. Even the hyped nh 66 has illegal toll gate collection happening at Surathkal. The railways are pathetic. The road traffic in Mangalore is awful. The city planning is the worst. All kinds of pollution are on the rise due to the vehicles and polluting industries. The local city buses and service buses in Mangalore are worst. There is no customer service, no website absolutely worst bus services and old dented buses without doors resembling the 1960 buses.
There are no flyovers, no underpasses at crucial points in Mangalore such as Nanthoor, KPT, Falnir. The traffic near Hampankatta is horrible and insane. Worst city planning in Mangalore with no grid patterned roads, no treelined garden roads, no corniche waterfront bypass roads, no rapid transport systems like Metro Rail, BRTS or suburban trains. Electric vehicles and buses usage are swept under the carpet. The Mangalore Airport is worst and it has a very dangerous short tabletop runway.
Beaches in Mangalore are pathetic, the rivers, riversides are horribly polluted in Mangalore. I found it very unsafe to travel as a single woman in Mangalore buses. India is one of the worst countries for women. In India throughout, there are huge occurrences of rape, sexual harassment, groping and molestation. India is definitely one of the worst countries and very dangerous for women. I found Yorkshire, UK a million times safer for women than any place in India. United Kingdom is highly liberal and open-minded when it comes to women rights and concerns. The people in UK are far far better for women compared to India.
In India, people are worst. Beef ban is a stupid concept throughout India. But India leads in beef exports. This type of hypocrisy and double-standards you'll never find among the UK people. India is still a third-world country.
Vaishnavi on Nov 29, 2021:
Air pollution is increasing in Mangalore because of the buses, lorries, water tankers and an exponential rise in private vehicles, cars and bikes. The city private buses in Mangalore don't even have a website or any customer care service. The introduction of electric buses, metro rails, electric bus BRTS service, electric suburban rails are a good way to reduce air pollution, but the private bus mafia in Mangalore ensures that these projects never come into picture. There are no initiatives taken in increasing the number of software companies in Mangalore. And no one is keen on stopping the spread of polluting industries. Many people still burst firecrackers and burn waste items in open places. Trees are cut at many places near the roadsides but trees and gardens are not being restored at the same places.
Subramanian on Nov 20, 2021:
Mangaluru has rapidly increasing pollution because of the hazardous petrochemical industries, fishmeal industries and the iron-ore pelletization plant. The private buses and the KSRTC red buses within Mangaluru city are the worst and they cause severe pollution. Trees are cut down for showoff apartments. Water scarcity and management is worst.
The traffic in Mangaluru is extremely high and the roads are congested. The roads are never constructed at Mangaluru in grid patterns. Worst planning in Mangaluru with no tree-lined footpath roads, no gardens on the road medians, no road markers, vehicles horn for no reason, no electric buses, no proper bus terminal, no Metro rail, no BRTS, and an airport with worst runway and infrastructure. People still dump rubbish in the riverside and the beaches are maintained in a pathetic way. Trash burning and bursting of firecrackers are still practised by the literate fools. The highways connecting Mangaluru are the worst. There are no Shatabdi trains connecting Mangaluru. There are very very few software companies, hardly any research institutions in Mangaluru. Top quality educational institutions such as IIM, IITs, IISc, Astrophysics, Statistical institutes, ISRO are not there in Mangaluru. With very poor job opportunities and poor education infrastructure, most people will move out of Mangaluru and permanently settle in other cities. Mangaluru has pathetic infrastructure, horrible planning and job opportunities are worst. People never elect their political representatives on merit or great service to society. Worst useless candidates get elected time and again in Mangaluru. The Indian Media, newspapers and news channels are the worst in the world.
Ajay Mehta on Nov 19, 2021:
Mangaluru has worst traffic for a small tier2 city. Most people have craze of riding vehicles and the roads are clogged with cars, bikes and trucks. The bus facilities in Mangaluru is the worst and cause plenty of pollution. Karnataka has worst connectivity within the state and very poor in the logistics sector compared to my native Gujarat.

https://bangaloremirror.indiatimes.com/bangalore/others/karnatak-slips-by-a-rank-in-logistics/articleshow/87612995.cms

Mangaluru has worst road and rail connectivity with other cities of Karnataka. The city of Mangaluru has worst planning. The airport of Mangaluru is worst and highly dangerous during the monsoon.
Rupesh Reddy on Nov 12, 2021:
Mangalore does not even have a proper bus stand for city buses. All the private buses and even the outdated Red KSRTC buses give out enormous amount of toxic smoke. No MP, MLA, DC in Mangalore has woken up to have an upgraded fleet of electric buses soon. Introduction of Metro Rails in Mangalore are also a good way to stop pollution in public transport in intra-city mode. There is complete neglect by the officials here in having a new bus terminal, tree-lined roads with gardens on roadsides and footpaths. In my opinion, Mangalore needs more software companies, research companies soon. This city does not need industries that pollute the environment. Mangalore needs good planning, infrastructure and job opportunities for educated people very soon in my humble opinion.
BWU on Sep 10, 2021:
The fish meal industries at the tip of Ullal beside Nethravathi river causes a lot of stinking air across many localities in Mangalore. Nauseating smell everyday and night because of these fish meal industries are experienced across Mangalore localities close to the rivers. For someone not from the coastal belt, this stinking air can be abhorrent. Untreated sewage is directly released into the rivers at many places in Mangalore.
Anonymous on Aug 04, 2021:
Mangalore receives the highest annual rainfall among the corporation/metro cities of India. Each year around 4000 mm annual rainfall or more gets recorded at Mangalore. And yet, Mangalore faces water shortage in summer. This itself speaks volumes of the pathetic infrastructure and planning. The so called 'development' in Mangalore only means putting some cement on the roads and building some apartments. That's it. Pollution is increasing, traffic is increasing but economy and white-collar jobs for engineers, scientists, investors, bankers and researchers are almost negligible here in Mangalore. The wages are pathetic over here for these jobs but the cost of living is very high for a Tier-2 city.
Arjun on Mar 05, 2021:
Air quality is very bad nowadays in Mangaluru. Many people and administration are least bothered. Plenty of people use their vehicles to showoff their pride, social status and wealth. Smoke emission tests are never carried out by private vehicles, trucks and buses. Both the private and KSRTC local buses release toxic smoke. Traffic police are of absolutely no use. Petrochemical industries at Bykampady and Padubidri release umpteen amount of smoke day and night. Trash burning is observed in many places and some people burst firecrackers day and night. Road repairs are left incomplete and dust circulates everywhere. Plastic wrappers, containers are found scattered here and there in public places. The majority of denizens, the city corporation officials, corporations and elected representatives are living in a world of delusion.
Vaibhav Jha on Feb 14, 2021:
Air quality is also on the decline. Due to the road projects, there is dust circulating very frequently.
The vehicles are also increasing, all these factors along with the petrochemical industries contribute to rising air pollution. Some people still burst crackers.
Mangalore needs metro rail, electric buses, BRTS, corniche roads and software companies instead of petrochemical industries.
Brijesh on Jan 08, 2021:
Pollution is increasing in Mangalore. Cleanliness of public places is on the decline. Many places on the roadside are strewn with garbage. Mangalore City Corporation mayor, MLAs and MPs are terrible. People are fools to vote for such useless politicians. Riversides are polluted with garbage and the Gurupura-Nethravathi rivers are filled with trash. People burst crackers without social distancing during those October November festivals. That time Coronavirus will not bother anyone.
Tourist places in Mangalore are terrible to say the least.
Keerthesh on Oct 10, 2020:
Many places within the city of Mangalore need plenty of improvement, as far as cleanliness and sanitation are concerned. All the riversides and localities such as Bunder, Central Market, Alake, Hampankatta and Urva ferry point need to be cleaned up. The water in the Netravati and Gurupura rivers is contaminated. The boat ride from Boloor ferry point (Urva) to Tannirbavi Beach via Gurupura river is an eyesore. The old fishing boats used here to ferry tourists is absurd! Infact this one of the most popular tourist attractions of Mangalore !
The surface of the entrance to Panambur Beach is filled with black charcoal. The trucks carrying charcoal, petroleum, etc. from the nearby Port are allowed to enter tourist beaches! This is a turnoff for international tourists.
Hope the people and the city corporation officials wake up and improve the sanitation especially in these localities and throughout the city.

compared to any cities or town of India mangalore is far better and people are more clean and hygienic let me say other way round that people in mangalore are self explained and awareness of hygienic is in DNA of local population in any other way i strongly feel mangalore is most livable cities compared to any other towns & cities of India, people are well aware of cleanliness and in future it need to be done more due to increasing population and industrialization
Vishwa on Jul 14, 2020:
Just visit the riversides of Mangalore. All rivers, riversides here are indeed polluted. People in India love to dump waste materials into water bodies. The private buses emit a lot of black smoke. Many people burn trash openly outside their own houses. The Petrochemical industries spew out gallons of smoke into the air. The harmful industrial waste is let out into the rivers. People don't know the true meaning of green cities, sustainable cities, etc.
I understand that these problems are found throughout India, not just Mangalore. The private buses are an exception though. In any ATM kiosk, the floor is littered with bills. Firecrackers are relentlessly busted during festivals throughout the night. Loudspeakers with amplifiers are played throughout the day and night during feasts. Indians never care about rules. Indians also lack civic-sense.
Unless the cleanliness and pollution rules are made more strict, people will go on polluting places. There are a substantial number of law-abiding citizens, but their efforts and discipline unfortunately are in vain.
