i was born and raised in Mumbai. I'd defo recommend, it's very unique and an interesting place to travel but quite overcrowded, you can manage the crowd well if you're travelling from "churchgate" or southern part of "fort" to all the way to the end of mumbai "colaba". The Most Overcrowded places are probably Andheri, Dadar, Wadala, Bandra, Malad and sometimes Santa Cruz, these places usually have an intense rush hour and on a good day it's does not which is quite rare. And speaking of safety is very complex, it's hard to be specific with exactly which places has the most crime rates because Mumbai is crowded and it's easy to blend in so i would just advice to avoid sketchy or poor areas and generally empty and quite streets. Mumbai has a coastal side (South) and as well as mountainous area (North, Suburbs and Outskirts). Best places to travel in my opinion are Fort, Girgaon (Seaface Areas), Haji Ali, Marine Lines, Coastal side of Bandra, Churchgate or just walk around the places to get a sense of a typical neighbourhood in Mumbai.

Well, I was born and raised in Mumbai and in my opinion, Mumbai is not that unsafe well when I think of that, this place is also sadistic for poor people because the rich never get bothered by the slums because of the luxury they have in the places where they live. Well, this is also a place of gold diggers where all people are chasing after is money which is the only cause of bribery and other crimes here. Like how easy is it to get over a murder in Mumbai? 5,000,000 rupees that's it? Where is the justice for the dead? Nowhere because money is all we crave for innit?

Follow normal precautions like you would in any big city, e.g. avoiding deserted roads, locking your doors, etc. and you will be fine!

I have went on vacation to Mumbai several times. Well I have seen there, crimes does occur there but it’s still comparatively safer and livable than Delhi,Bangalore,Kolkata,Chennai and Pune.So let’s not avoid coming to Mumbai just because crimes does occur there. The only thing you should keep in your mind when you are in Mumbai is to remain careful at all times. As pickpocketing risk is high there. So if you follow all the precautions there, then it’s definitely safe.

Just visited Mumbai.. I do feel unsafe because of my looks. I'm fom northeast so people try to name call me, names like chineese, chinki, Mongolian etc etc.. boys try to click pictures without asking me.
Worst experience.
People just stare and stare.. whispers... so annoying.

Mumbai is very unsafe. I live here and feel very unsafe anywhere here.
Vishwa on Nov 17, 2021:
Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata are the worst places to live in India. Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata have plenty of slums and poverty and are extremely filthy places. Mumbai's wealth is mainly because of a few billionaires and the headquarters of some banks and organizations. The wealth distribution of Mumbai is highly skewed. Only narrow-minded "frog in a well" type of people will say Mumbai is good place. The horrible drainage system, the flooding, rush and stampede and apathy for other people in local trains are the terrible aspects of Mumbai. Organized crime is rampant in Mumbai. The cost of living and accommodation are extremely high in Mumbai w.r.t Indian cities. The roads are very unplanned and over 20 million people are crammed in a tiny sea-locked concrete jungle. Rape and molestation are high in Mumbai, but they don't get registered or reported. Covid positive cases are extremely high and among the worst in India, throughout Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Maharashtra.

Mumbai has the Chor Bazaar (Thieves Market) where stolen items are sold. The goods and items stolen from you could be sold here by thieves. This is the true story of Mumbai. The police, lawyers, judges and politicians of Mumbai and Pune are hooligans themselves and major culprits. Along with the deluge, worst drainage, hoards of slums, poverty, money inequality and stinking smell throughout this city, Mumbai is among the worst place to live in the world.
DaddyDog on Nov 13, 2021:
most of the comments here bullshit. i was born and brought up in mumbai. this is a safe city.underworld was wiped out over 2 decades ago. yes, some cops are corrupt, like any city. but people here arr nice. it also very cosmopolitan - with people from all over the country in the city.
Vivek Dutt on Oct 11, 2021:
Mumbai is a pathetic place where rape, assaults and murders are very common in this jam-packed town.
Most of the products from foreign countries that are past their expiry date, appalling low quality products are imported by India through Mumbai. These scrap products' expiry and manufacturing details are forged. Hence in India all junk products are sold.
If you want to purchase very good quality products at a low price, then honestly please visit Dubai, Muscat or Bahrain.
Mumbai is India's gateway for importing millions of scrap third-rated products in bulk to the country.
Rajeev on Oct 02, 2021:
Mumbai is one of the most unsafe places in the world. It comprises more than 50% of its population of only slums and poverty. Most of Mumbai's GDP is because of a few billionaire actors, industrialists and headquarters of some banks that are located here. Mumbai is awfully claustrophobic. The recent gangrene and murder of a woman, along with the apathy and the stampede in the local trains, prove that Mumbai is indeed a worst place in terms of crime and quality of life. Mumbai is an unlivable hellhole.

Worries home broken and things stolen:
Nah, this is very rare

Worries being mugged or robbed
Chain snatching and phone stealing on trains still happen, not rare

Worries car stolen
Nah, people are scared of license plates being traced

Worries things from car stolen
Again, not an issue here

Worries attacked
Molestation? Yes. I've experienced it too, that too in broad daylight in a public place. But as a cop said to me, punch and kick them instead of being scared. It's difficult to catch them once they run away.

Worries being insulted
Zero worries. Most mumbaikars are nice

Worries being subject to a physical attack because of your skin color, ethnic origin, gender or religion
Physical attacks? No. But there is some bias based on which part of India you are from. My family is from south india but I speak better Marathi than my mother tongue and have lived here all my life, yet some people treat me like an outsider. Some teachers in school used to look down on non-maharashtrian kids.

Problem people using or dealing drugs
I've read in news of drugs being caught by cops but never encountered anyone dealing or taking drugs

Problem property crimes such as vandalism and theft
Theft occasionaly happens, yes.

Problem violent crimes such as assault and armed robbery
Nope. There were terrorist attacks from Pakistan many years ago. Indians don't like hurting other Indians

Problem corruption and bribery
A lottt of it. Cops take bribes from poor vendors, extort teenage couples, shopkeepers. Politicans extort cops for money and good cops are forced to transfer away. There are honest people, but lot of corrupt people too.

Summary: Mumbai is a great city and has its ups and downs. Most of us are just good folk wanting to live a happy life and help others in need.

As a female Mumbaikar, I can safely say that, most of these comments are by cringey trolls. They all have the same pattern (highly suspicious). Mumbai is safe and welcoming. Don't listen to the trolls here, they've probably watched a mafia movie from the 80s & then decided to write a summmary for it.
Radha on Mar 10, 2021:
Mumbai being a slum-infested town is one of the worst places to live as a woman. Rapes, sexual harassment are very common in Mumbai. The entire town of Mumbai is ruled by the Underworld. Crimes against women never get reported in Mumbai. I say this as a woman from Mumbai. Police force of Mumbai are puppets of the Underworld.
Kavitha on Mar 10, 2021:
Mumbai has bad police force and it is extremely unsafe for women. It is filled with slums.
Anonymous on Mar 08, 2021:
From my point of view , In India only Mumbai is safe city for women because it has strong police force in India. Mumbai is safer than any other city in India.
Aditya Chavan on Feb 26, 2021:
It is true that rural India has better quality of life than urban areas. The Maharashtra government, film actors, tycoons are paying hefty bribes to the Mumbai Underworld to spare their lives. Mumbai is ruled and governed by the Underworld. Mumbai and Maharashtra have the highest number of Covid positive cases in India.
Mark on Feb 26, 2021:
It is astonishing to understand that people here trust the propaganda without any reasoning. To be very honest, life for a Christian in India is better than the Christian countries themselves. I have lived in USA for 2 years and have returned back home to India. In my 43 years in India, I never faced any problem being a Christian here. We Christians are thankful for the Hindu nation India.
Hemant on Feb 26, 2021:
I am surprised that people are so keen on trusting propaganda. The comments posted by some people are propaganda and these are circulated by the media. Media spreads rumors very quickly these days. I am not sure as to why the media always shows only the negative side of India. The reality is that people are living peacefully. Please don't believe in propaganda. This is my advice to the people and the commenters here.
Imran on Feb 25, 2021:
Hindutva militants are doing their best to turn the whole of India into a dystopia. Mumbai and Delhi are already dystopias that are globally acclaimed as urban disasters. These Hindutva militants love to permanently settle abroad and target the minorities in India. Muslims are not at all safe in Indian cities such as Mumbai and also in the state of Gujarat.
Neeraj on Feb 25, 2021:
Mumbai is right up there among the worst places to live in the world. The local administration is a failure. For such a high population, the infrastructure is absolutely pathetic in Mumbai. It is a pathetic place.
Karthik on Feb 25, 2021:
Millions of people in Mumbai support the ethnic cleansing of religious minorities such as Christians. People in many parts of India want this 2% of the total population of the country to be completely wiped out. People including NRIs and PIOs have open spoken out about this on social media platforms. As others have said, Mumbai and Delhi are the top worst cities on earth.
Adarsh on Feb 01, 2021:
Mumbai is a complete shithole filled with plenty of slums. Mumbai is famous fof Underworld and Organized crime. Mumbai is a paradise for murderers, rapists, burglars, gangsters and extortionists. More than 60% of Mumbai is slums only. The Mumbai police is hand-in-glove with the Underworld. The Mumbai underworld is funded by Maharashtra politicians.
Mumbai is the Hell in this world. Mumbai is the worst place on earth.
Keerthi on Jun 28, 2020:
Mumbai is probably the worst city to live in the entire world. There is no space here and a tiny piece of reclaimed land surrounded by sea is occupied by more than 20 million people.
There is absolutely no greenery here and Mumbai is terrible in every sense of the word.
Half of Mumbai lives in slums. Mumbai is surely the dirtiest city in the world. Much much worse than New Delhi. New Delhi's main problem is air pollution, due to stubble burning in Haryana and Punjab.
Mumbai is a place filled with few billionaire industrialists and Bollywood celebrities. Then you have the plethora of slums to serve these billionaires.
