Lot of culture, diffent food places.
Lake merit beautiful, zoo in the hills, fairyland by the lake Merritt.

born and raised and still in oakland...don't get caught on the wrong street and you will be okay in oakland. don't wear blue or red during the cinco de mayo parades in fruitvale district, don't go dissing the asians and the brothers in the funk or the dubs -> 30's. don't go messing with the goons down in the west or in the east....

but for the most part there is lake merrit, uptown, parts of fruitvale, laurel and diamond district etc etc which are not marred by crime

Bullshit. I've lived in Oakland for a long time. Sure, the crime is fairly bad in some areas, but in a lot of places in Oakland, you're completely safe. No need to be afraid to come here at all.
