#Anonymous on Feb 21, 2017 :
There is no life,here.
It's just work,eat,sleep,repeat.

The person who has added the prices for childcare is out of his|her mind, probably.
In the district I live I have plenty of kindergartens, both private and public ones, and the price vary from 650-800 (the cheapest one AND the public) to 2500 (like "all-is-there-primium-clildcare) yuan per month (full day, 7am-5pm, 3 meals). For 3500-4000 an agency can find a babysitter for you (again, full day, and optionally she will cook and clean). So 12k per month as an AVERAGE price? you gotta be kidding. I am in GZ, not in SZ, but average price is similar now, according to this site...

Shenzhen is probably one of the most boring cities in asia for single men.
If some people deny it,it's because they haven't lived in Thailand or the Philippines.
#Anonymous on Aug 14, 2016 :
Consider $500-$600 USD for renting a one bedroom apartment in Shenzhen.

Other living expenses at least $1000 USD/month for a westerner.

Dont accept any teaching job that pays less than 15000 Yuan/month at this time.If they offer 12000 yuan/month and a private furnished apt,off campus, they are just offering a minimum.
If you are patient, you can find a job, paying you at least 15000 yuan a month, free private apt, annual flight reimbursement and annual bonus.
Good luck.

I have been offered a teaching position in Shenzhen but the contract is a little confusing, I am unable to determine if this of this is a good rate of pay in line with rent and cost of living.
I also have some financial commitments on the uk. Can anybody give me guidance with this.

kind regards

Some of what you say is true, some is not.
Hongkies do not come much nowadays to Shenzhen since the Yuan is stronger. Costs in Shenzhen for many items are not really that cheap as compared to Hkg (say, in Mongkok). Also, for electronics, most Shenzhen people who want to buy original stuff (and there are loads of them, since salaries in Shenzhen are pretty high) go to Hkg as they are surer about the quality.

Btw, it is not peking, it is Beijing. Yes, Shenzhen has high speed trains to Guangzhou and Xiamen, and the undergroudn is fantastic, with rapid expansion on 2 additional new lines.

Rents are expensive (but that is compared to other Chinese cities - not western cities), but then Chinese people habitually save so they stay in palces where rent takes up less than half their salary.

Ad nope - we do nto have workers with PhDs! Most workers from Shenzhen have recently come from the provinces. In any case, Most people who live in Shenzhen have migrated into the city 10-30 years ago.

There are a few expats - but you will msotly see Chinese people.

As for investing, forget it - costs of houses in Shenzhen are already pretty high (comparable I woudl say to Hkg and much higher than many European / Brit / American cities). They are mostly affordable to techies earning 100,000 yuan per month.

PS - I live in Shenzhen
#Charles on Jul 10, 2016 :
@ Erik

They are correct. 15k can be considered the median salary in Shenzhen.

Do note that most people in Shenzhen earn far higher (often double or more ) salaries. However, the range is extreme. For example, the techies in Ten cent earn to the tune of 30k per month. Many of the engineers there earn upto 100k per month. That is stunningly high, even by western standards (heard of techies in UK earning 60k - 120 k per year?)

PS - I live in Shenzhen
#Anonymous on Jul 10, 2016 :
May of the costs are downright wrong. For example: you can pick up Levis jeans for 40-60 RMB at clothes shops. A meal for 2 in Shekou will cost around 100 RMB in a restaurant ( I am not referring to the quick eating restaurants that we use for lunch, but normal budget restaurants - say near Sea world area. The more expensive restaurants IN Sea world / Hilton easily cost double.)

#BC - Yes, 20k is a reasonable salary. Expect to pay 8000 - 10,000 RMB per month on your rent. That is the only major cost. Food is priced normally (more expensive than Chengdu and Xiamen).

Prices in Shenzhen are more or less the same as Beijing and Shanghai.
Guangzhou is much cheaper than Shenzhen
#BC on Jul 03, 2016 :
I was offered 20k before tax as an operation manager in Shenzhen. Is this reasonable?
#erik on Apr 09, 2016 :
i'm sorry. not 15k but 5k yuans. we were spoking about salary in HongKong and Shenzhen. 15 k it's for HK. 5k it's for shenzhen
#erik on Apr 09, 2016 :
i've been in shenzhe in 2013. locals said that they have 15k yuans per month. this is their median salary.
#alex ferdman on Oct 23, 2015 :
Ok. My 2 cents. I was not overly happy in Shenzhen but, yes, food is cheap, Walmart open every day, subway has easy access to Hong Kong and plenty of shopping except electronics.
But for my taste not much art for sale and no markets like in Singapore or Istanbul.
Plus, for a single guy it looks more complicated than Thailand which is waiting.

Shenzhen is one tier city like Peking and Shanghai. It locate next to Hong Kong. So you could see a lot of Honkies buy there. The Rule of tumbs is if it take 1/2 to 1 hours reach next city, the price would drop half. If Hong Kong city can sell 15k per m square, then Shenzen can get that price. This is all because Shenzhen can have high speed train to there. So you need to know why the working people just good enough to cover their meal, accommodation and traveling expenses. You can see Tokyo is the same also. Even worker with PhD. So you need to be smart. Stay in cheap country or outskirt and work and bring back the money and safe half of your salary. Look for next booming city and used your hard earn money to invest. Hopefully by another 10-20 years, you would be another land lord property owner of next 1 tier city and you do not need to work anymore for your daily expenses. Let the youngsters like you now struggle. So Struggle hard and no complain, live thrifty and safe more. No need to produce baby first until you manage to get your first house, I mean you able to pay 50% downpayment and rest by loan ( 3 bedroom apartement). Then ask your wife stay at parents or their parent house for few year and save more while you work in the city. By the time then you work 10-20 years, you would paid off your apartment( since you rent out 2 rooms). Then you can refinance or sell and buy 2 apartment in the same area, now you can ask your wife and your teenage son live in city. Now you can partly retire and work easy job since you can get positive cash flow from your 2nd apartment. I think this scheme can work if you willing to "struggle hard first and easy would come later principle". Not like others economic terrorist complain here and there. We live in a socially order system where elders already do thier part to archive their financial freedom. So do your part and learn from the owner stories and not complain the system. By the time you get old, do you want what you earn being drain out by the system. Please learn from history eg GM retirees where their stock option drain out during crisis. I cannot promise this can work for you but you really need a discipline for 20 years planning ahead. So you just break your target to 5 years plan and once reach your target and readjust. Good luck
#Skyscraper Boy on Mar 12, 2015 :
If you live outside the special economic zone in Shenzhen you can enjoy a much better lifestyle at an affordable price.

I have been watching videos by Winston on Youtube (look up user SerpentZA) - really, it has opened up my eyes..

Shenzhen is a clean, safe and friendly city and most people live well and can save money.

This is the technology city of PRC where huge international tech companies get their smart-phones, tablets and other tech devices
built. Also, this is a manufacturing city where all sorts of products are made, not just tech.

There are many western entrepreneurs trying their luck in Shenzhen and many have chosen to live there permanently in preference to living
back in their home countries.

I would like to rent a 2 room apartment nearby to Foxconn. Please give advise which apartment will be better and cheaper. Any website I can refer to.

Compared with Beijing, I doubt about the CPI and related data. I lived in Beijing from 2008 to 2012 and living in Shenzhen since 2012. CPI, especally food related comsumptions, Shenzhen is much cheaper than Beijing, while the service quality is much better. In fact, except that public transportation cost is much more expensive than Beijing, other living cost is cheaper than Beijing.
#Angela on May 07, 2014 :
According to the government report in 2013 July, that the Shenzhen Average Salary of 2013 is 4918, before tax.

But as you are a foreigner that expatriate to Shenzhen from your company generally your salary is much much higher. 50,000 to 25,000 monthly maybe
#Charis on May 07, 2014 :
In Shenzhen, for the normal people it is very hard to have their own apartment, normally the parents support them to buy it.
#Anonymous on Jun 22, 2013 :
PHD's Salary is about 2500 dollers here, and apartment is about 300,000 dollers,it will cost you about 10 years without eating and drinking. That is true china.for PDH

Little is extremely rich and half is unbelievable poor.
#Anonymous on May 05, 2013 :
The median salary for many people is just the base salary, not including commission. Many earn over double that amount with commission and receive large bonuses at the end of the year.
