Riga is very safe in comparison to other European cities. I have walked alone day and night in the center and also outskirts haven’t enountered any dangerous situations whereas in London, Paris, Rome and other cities were quite dangerous not even talking about the USA, especially DC.

Riga is a very safe city! Have walked around not only in the city center, but also have visited the outskirts! Super safe in day and at night! Only thing avoid local Russians! Latvians are very reserved, but not that aggressive.

This city is worth to travel to and is much safer then Liepaja, the only city I recommend going to in Latvia.

Nowhere on this planet is 100℅ safe.I travelled to big west EU cities Milan Paris Frankfurt and in my opinion less safe espclly had a bad experience in Italy . Riga is beatful .all u need is be cautious .if u are out at night try avoid dark places or standing people and sometimes those drunk guys...otherwise nothing to worry

My nephew, Dmitriy Olegovich Volev (009.11.1993-27.09.2020, Odessa, Ukraine) has gone to work in "LIDO" restaurant (Riga, Latvia) under the contract as a Sushi Chef and has been compelled to run urgently the nearest accessible flight (21.09.2019) in Moscow where has been overtaken and has been killed а people connected with LIDO Empire

Local here with some travel experience. I would say Riga is not that dangerous at all, especially its city center. And it's relatively safe to walk around at night here.
Don't believe biased comments people leave, just travel and see everything with your own eyes.

Some foreigners say Riga is a dangerous place and must be avoided, that's completely false, they just were the unlucky ones for being a victim for a pocket theft, assault or maybe abuse. And they might say Riga must be avoided, as a Riga citizen myself I'm saying there is little to worry about. I've been at Central Riga countless of times, and the only thing I've ever was worried about was gypsies because they are scammers, and pretty shitty ones even, but even those are very rare and have encountered them only like 3 times, and the best thing to do is just to ignore them. Sure, evenings or night time in Riga might be unsafe, but at these times its mostly to encounter teens playing loud music, and possibly even be drunk.

But even with the random acts of violence, they are rare, unless you go looking for it. Riga is a very safe city compared to most European cities and is a great city to raise a family or just to fall in love. Lots of culture and events to see or be involved.

I've lived in Riga 6 years and have been coming here since 2000 and the only problem I have is random acts of violence by local Russians.
This Saturday walking home from a party, crossing Tallin iela and Avotu, I was sucker punched when THEY asked me for a cigarette.. (All the aggression I've seen over the years comes from the local russian population, arrogant, judgmental, aggressive and generally pissed off.) My advice is don't walk home alone when intoxicated or please take a cab. Unless you are in a crowded area, Don't smile or try to be friendly or even stop to help someone.
This is my personal experience and others I know who who experience similar situations.
