I moved here from Toronto this summer. I’ve walked all over this city; the downtown area, waterfront, bike paths, from very early morning to when the bars close. I’ve come across 20+ homeless encampments and talked to dozens of street people here.

I have never once been threatened, yelled at, harassed, assaulted, robbed, or even bothered for change. And I wonder why the townspeople here seem so skittish and afraid of everything?

My partner and I lived in the Beaches neighbourhood, considered to be one of the safest and yet before I left we’d be woken up to gunshots. People were being stabbed on the streetcar on our route on Queen St E and Woodbine.

People in this town are a bunch of babies. You don’t know how bad things can be out there and all anyone does here is complain.

Everything used to be fine here until they started showing up….

Remember growing up there we rarely locked our doors. Not the case now, even in quiet residential areas always someone going through your stuff on your property.

Crime rate has been rising tremendously in the past 5 years, while it never was the best place to live in it has been getting considerably worse. Especially in the downtown area.

We've had an influx of homeless people from bigger cities as well. And the drug rate is extremely high, will likely grow higher, and the meth problem here is still ridiculous

I've had a couple experiences getting mugged within the past year, and my friends have as well. If you don't ever want to see a knife pulled on you I'd recommend not living here, because aside from maybe the very wealthy suburbs up on the north end you'll probably have a uncomfortable time.

North bay has become a toilet and the police are a joke also. They do nothing to help out as myself have had 6 times people trying to break into my home and they did nothing....maybe if I was 1000% white they would help out but I have had them call me names and are 99.9% all white police force. Funny I pay city taxes and get crapped on.
Johnny on Dec 21, 2022:
Horrible crime rate. The drug addicts run amuck and do whatever they want. The police simply drive right by them. They’ve taken over this beautiful city and it’s hard to get passed it.
James on Sep 10, 2022:
There is a massive drug and addiction problem in North Bay, and it is not being addressed by the police or the city council. Our neighbourhoods are a mess with thefts and vandalism. North Bay is a terrible place to live and we are looking to move out of here as soon as possible. The positives don't outweigh the bad. Everywhere you look there are problems and issues. The drivers blasting loud music and the constant barking dogs are at the bottom of the pile, because the drugs, addiction, theft, vandalism, violence, and non-stop threats are everywhere you turn. North Bay needs to be overhauled, from top to bottom, and the city council needs to be completely removed and replaced. I have lost all hope for this city and can't wait to leave this living nightmare.

They are stealing cheques from mailboxes. They steal bikes giant tiger walmart north gate. Please take the homeless people off the streets. All the people in north bay are mad at them stealing. It is crime.
Julie Larochelle on Sep 07, 2022:
I am not happy with the homeless people on the streets they are breaking in the mail boxes steal stuff out of people mail packages. It is a crime. Please Clear the homeless off the streets. No one likes homeless because they can't be trusted.

It doesn’t matter what it is. Whether it’s drug crimes in a small village to a large city, it depends if you have the blinders on and you don’t want to acknowledge or see what is happening. Homelessness in North Bay , further north or in Toronto is still homelessness. The real problem still boils down to mental illness. At the end of the day nobody wants to deal with the issue, handing money to a panhandler or handing out a ticket to panhandler will not solve the problem. There needs to be a community wide commitment to assess and come up with solutions to help people but this comes back down to a tri-level commitment with funding. Until then, we have North Bay’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan (CSWBP) which is a coordinated effort to foster a safe, healthy and inclusive community by responding to identified priority risks. Looking at the website last information is dated May 2021…it’s now 2022!

Another thing is that everytime someone is arrested and it doesn't matter if you've murdered someone. There's never any consequences for the people who steal/ harm as they are always put out on bail, if there were consequences like actually having them stay in jail and do the time
A person on Jan 10, 2022:
I'm honestly hating living here and I've lived here all my life, NB needs to address the homelessness problem responsibly, I dont even feel safe getting a job here anymore.
Sara on Jan 05, 2022:
Other cities have sent their homeless and addicts to North bay because NB is the only city that has resources to help adicrs. Yet NB is now overloaded with homeless and addicts and it has taken a huge toll on the city, my question is..... if NB has the rescourses for addicts and homeless to get help they need then where are the ones that ACTUALLY do get the help they need.

Lives here for 10 years had to move out because the crime was unbearable. Breaking my car, stealing my stuff. People getting stabbed like it’s another day in the park. Druggies shooting up middle of the street. Cops are crooked and part of it.

I have lived here most of my life, and the place is turning into a shitshow.
In the last 3 years, I have had more things occur to myself/my family than the previous 25 years all living in the same area(west end/Pinewood)
House was broken into once, computers/tv/anything of value stolen.
My storage shed 4 times, bikes, tools etc taken.
My parents garage was vandalized and things were taken/destroyed.
I work at the College and there are always many sexual assaults that occur.
I have had my car's paint scratched and tires slashed. as did several neighbors.
Mail and packages have been stolen to many times to count.
Car was broken into, 100% sure it was locked. it was ransacked and ownership/insurance/any change/small toolbox/glasses all gone.
Even with security cameras they still do these things,
FTJ on Aug 12, 2021:
North Bay has the same drug and crime issues as any other large city. If you don't use drugs, lock up your house and car and enjoy being active its a great place to live. they di need to clean up some of the empty buildings in the downtown area.
DS on Aug 12, 2021:
North Bay is similar to Kingston. I lived there and also Niagara Falls. The people in North complain about crime but its not that bad compared to other places. I love the lakes and the low cost of homes. I can fish all summer and ski all winter. Its beginning to become a great place for young people who want to spend time on trials, lakes and beaches.
Anon on Jul 29, 2021:
Literally worse than Toronto, only positive thing in the city is the new music scene
CM on Jul 23, 2021:
Well, alrighty then, I just read the comments, it sounds like a place to skip then...thanks for the info, yet as again, if the demograpic behaviours are like East will never meet West...well, then I can live in the multiverse in my own dimension and be glad I'm inside before it gets dark anyways.
CM on Jul 23, 2021:
I think it wouldn't be so bad at all to live if your lifestyle is the opposite of the drug dealers and their clients. Early to bed, early to rise...makes North Bay a lovely place.
Anonymous on Jul 08, 2021:
This town is a dump, buildings are dilapidated, crack heads walking around everywhere. This whole place reminds me of every other cities skid row. I cannot think of 1 positive to say and would be ashamed to call this crack village my home
Anonymous on Jul 01, 2021:
Violent crimes are a problem. Police/City hall are seriously corrupt. School are full of gangs. Insurance rates are expensive. taxes highest in the province. List goes on and gone. Only positive is housing prices are decent but you pay for it when your stuff gets constantly stolen by meth heads.
Anonymous on May 16, 2021:
North Bay is very dangerous. What the majority of people are saying on this thread is very much true. Stephanie Trusler is obviously oblivious to what is actually going on in this town. Read the news, see for yourself.
Pierre on May 01, 2021:
I lived in Nbay and the drugs/rapes are very high. Lots of young girls getting raped at the college/university. Police is underrepresented. Lots of drug addicts breaking in. Not a place I ever want to come back too
Jane on Apr 17, 2021:
Stephanie, I guess Shannon Kochie doesn't count. Murdered by her boyfriend in 2015 while her family listened at the door trying to get in. Not to mention all of the attempted murders and stabbings that happen almost every weekend. If you're going to act like an expert on the subject maybe you should be more informed.
Stephanie Trusler on Jan 17, 2021:
Don’t listen to those other people. I have lived here for 45 years. The last murder before this past one where the person was stabbed (by the way the guy who killed the guy was visiting from Ottawa) was Sarah Whitehead back in 1996. Toronto and Sudbury have more murders and raped. Chantal Laker,Randall Smith and Peter Jenkins have no idea what they are saying. They are just mad because they had their meth labs destroyed by the police. Or they were turned in because they were running child trafficking out of their homes. That’s why they left My wonderful town. We don’t put up with SCUMBAGS like then in our town. So they can go back down South where the most corrupt and idiotic people live.
