Guadalajara is generally quite safe as long as you practice common sense, and dress down. Petty crime certainly exists, so it is prudent to pay attention to your pockets when walking in large markets or crowded areas, especially in Centro Historico and in places such as the Mercado Libertad. Do not wear expensive jewelry, watches, or flashing cash/wallet around unnecessarily.

It becomes quite obvious when you are in an area you should not be in, but most places are totally fine during the day, especially if you are in a group. During the night it is important to stay aware of your surroundings. Thankfully Uber works very well in Guadalajara and it is very cheap, so instead of walking that 10 minutes from the bar at 2am, just take an Uber, it will cost you a maximum of 35 pesos. Be wary of people touching you, bumping into you, or spilling something on you, as this could possibly be a distraction to take things from your pockets in the commotion.

Overall: Don't go out alone at night, stay alert, don't wear anything too expensive... and you are unlikely going to have any problems at all.

Enjoy the city! Guadalajara is beautiful.
