I have been to Cozumel many times in the past 3 years. We usually stay in a home or apartment in a regular neighborhood and have not had any reasons to feel unsafe. Here, we have shootings and attacks reported all over our county every week! In Cozumel, We walk around the city day and night and feel safer than our home city in CA USA. We treat people kindly and are treated kindly. We have had a couple vendors try to take advantage when we were making a purchase, but overall we are treated respectfully. Most vendors are starting to recognize us and are now especially friendly and helpful - even when we don't purchase one item! I have seen many motor scooters sitting outside a house and even parked on the street in front of a home or business. Those folks don't seemed worried about having their stuff stolen. As for the food--we've found gr.eat places to eat good Mexican food. It isn't the same as mainland Mexican food because it has the Maya influence. Different areas of Mexico have different recipes and different preferences. That is to be expected. I don't care much for big cities really, so I probably won't go to Mexico City, but friends have told me that they enjoyed going there.

In the last three years living on Cozumel, I have known many people who have had their motorcycles or scooters stolen. From main streets in broad daylight. I have personally caught 5 people in the last eight months trying to either steal my motorcycle, or parts off of it. The people that live there act like it's not a problem, yet if you really ask them they will say if you like what you have then lock it down. You do not want to rent or own a place that doesn't have bars on the windows. Even if you think that you live behind a tall wall, you'd be amazed at the heights that I've seen thieves climbing to acquire your stuff. You don't want to walk around late at night by yourself.
The people of Cozumel will lie, cheat, and steal every dollar that they can get from you; especially if you are from somewhere else. While the overall perception of Cozumel is that it's one of the safest places that you can be. I feel safer in Mexico City than around all the robbers that Cozumel has. It's a shame that so much of the population let the amount of theft blindly go on because there are really good people there. It's just the percentage of thieves makes this place not worth the risks. Also, the food is the worst in all the Yucatan.
