I have lived in Cancun for the last 14 years and crime has increased 100 fold.
A very good friend of mine (Australian) was shot to death two weeks ago, one of my properties was burglarized this week, and armed men inside a white truck stopped traffic in front of my best friend yesterday. No, Csncun is not safe anymore. I live in a high end area, and it used to be paradise. Not any more. We actually live in fear now, but can't leave yet.

I am in Cancun for approximately 165 days per year average. Never had a problem. In downtown area most of the time. Day or night no problem. I hear of problems but actually see none other than overcrowded. The key is to avoid the bad areas / sectors.

I lived and worked in downtown Cancun from January 2019 through June 2019. Wonderful people and a safe place. I was careful but felt safer than walking around downtown Seattle (where I normally live). Very few street/homeless people out during the day and no one out at night. Women walked alone all day and into the evening. I was out late at night a few times and saw very few people on the streets, often no one else. Good to be safe and I tried to stay very aware of people and the situation at night - and there were no threats. Again, safer than Seattle at night - much less threatening. The hotel zone has a lot of police to keep tourists super safe. Downtown has more police than most US cities and they seemed to do a good job. My biggest concern is making sure I only ride in taxi's I call, unlicensed taxi's is the one thing that I continue to worry about. I do not worry about being attacked on the street.
