Cancún WAS safe, until criminals start taking advantage and begin a string of murders, include two marine soldiers being killed in Cancún. It seems Mexico isn't a safe country to visit, much less stay.

Safe cities in Mexico will eventually descend themselves into endless crime spree, and cops are not only corrupt, they will not help out. Governments also seem to get away with everything unpunished.

For your safety, do not go to Mexico, let alone Cancún. You won't last even a day or two on even "safe" cities, especially in Cancún.

A few years ago, Cancún used to be a safe, living paradise. Now it's descending itself into a cesspool of crime and corruption, including murder, robbery and corruption. And since cops had stopped caring for the safety of others, tourists are now at risk of being mugged, robbed, kidnapped or even killed, even on beaches.

I suggest going for other destinations if you're gonna go on beaches. You will not last the moment you set foot on what was once a popular tourist city, which also used to be safe from crime.

Cancun is not safe. I am actually being mugged right now as I write this

Criminals and gangs will always take advantage of "safe" cities in Mexico, and Cancun is no exception. The only reason why Cancun was "safe" is because lazy cops aren't too bothered or concerned about criminals not hesitating to shoot innocent people on sight, and they'll gladly shoot and/or abduct your children, even if supervised closely.

If you want to go to Cancun, always assume that cops will only help you if they feel like it. Otherwise, you're on your own.

Crime rates has risen, and Cancun is no longer safe, thanks to gangs and street thugs turning a tourist paradise into a warzone. Do NOT come to Mexico, much less Cancun, unless you want to risk getting mugged, and even killed. Police presence were also nonexistent, which was the reason why tourists are feeling unsafe.

Those who said that they felt safe or even want to retire there will need a dose of reality check. Latest news has sprouted regarding the sharp rise in murders, assaults and muggings, the beaches are also riddled with dead bodies because let's face it, the Mexican government turns a blind eye and "assures" everyone that Cancun is still a popular hotspot for many.

There are safer areas in different countries, and Mexico's Cancun has become anything but safe. If you value your life more than tourist areas, DO NOT COME TO CANCUN UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO PUT YOUR LIFE AT RISK, EVEN ON BROAD DAYLIGHT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

I want to retire in Mexico in 2016 but will be living alone as a woman. I am not materialistic or judgmental. I would like to know if it is possible for me to fulfil my dream of living in Mexico safely possibly in Merida. I am not rich either. I have been to Mexico and fell completely in love with the people, culture, food, simple way of life and anything else.

Canadian that has lived in Cancun 4 years, I have never seen any problems myself, and I go everywhere! Only violence I witnessed was two Canadians fighting outside a bar in Belize!

Ive been living in Cancun for more than 10 years and I have never been mugged nor have I seen someone get mugged. Just avoid the Regiones (ghetto neighborhoods).
