I am in Cancun for approximately 165 days per year average. Never had a problem. In downtown area most of the time. Day or night no problem. I hear of problems but actually see none other than overcrowded. The key is to avoid the bad areas / sectors.

I lived and worked in downtown Cancun from January 2019 through June 2019. Wonderful people and a safe place. I was careful but felt safer than walking around downtown Seattle (where I normally live). Very few street/homeless people out during the day and no one out at night. Women walked alone all day and into the evening. I was out late at night a few times and saw very few people on the streets, often no one else. Good to be safe and I tried to stay very aware of people and the situation at night - and there were no threats. Again, safer than Seattle at night - much less threatening. The hotel zone has a lot of police to keep tourists super safe. Downtown has more police than most US cities and they seemed to do a good job. My biggest concern is making sure I only ride in taxi's I call, unlicensed taxi's is the one thing that I continue to worry about. I do not worry about being attacked on the street.

If you are paranoid and believe everything you read in the news...then don't bother coming to Cancun. I've lived here for more than10 years and never felt endangered. Definitely not worse than any other city in US or Canada

I travel to Cancun once or twice a year (15+ times total, including three times in the last 12 months) and always feel safe, especially in the hotel zone. There is a significant uptick in gang violence in parts of downtown Cancun, so avoiding those areas is advised, however, it's rare for a tourist to venture outside the hotel zone anyway, and it's even more rare for a tourist to be the victim of a violent crime. I would venture that many of these negative comments are from people who have never been there, or who simply use their news sources as their truth without thinking it through. I live in Columbus Ohio and I feel safe here, but do I venture to the Hilltop for dinner? No, because there are higher crime rates. Cancun is no different that any other city in the states or anywhere else for that matter.

Cancun is not safe. I am actually being mugged right now as I write this
Tony on Apr 16, 2018:
Criminals and gangs will always take advantage of "safe" cities in Mexico, and Cancun is no exception. The only reason why Cancun was "safe" is because lazy cops aren't too bothered or concerned about criminals not hesitating to shoot innocent people on sight, and they'll gladly shoot and/or abduct your children, even if supervised closely.

If you want to go to Cancun, always assume that cops will only help you if they feel like it. Otherwise, you're on your own.
Chris on Apr 16, 2018:
Crime rates has risen, and Cancun is no longer safe, thanks to gangs and street thugs turning a tourist paradise into a warzone. Do NOT come to Mexico, much less Cancun, unless you want to risk getting mugged, and even killed. Police presence were also nonexistent, which was the reason why tourists are feeling unsafe.

Those who said that they felt safe or even want to retire there will need a dose of reality check. Latest news has sprouted regarding the sharp rise in murders, assaults and muggings, the beaches are also riddled with dead bodies because let's face it, the Mexican government turns a blind eye and "assures" everyone that Cancun is still a popular hotspot for many.

There are safer areas in different countries, and Mexico's Cancun has become anything but safe. If you value your life more than tourist areas, DO NOT COME TO CANCUN UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO PUT YOUR LIFE AT RISK, EVEN ON BROAD DAYLIGHT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
