Up to now for the last two years: one car break-in and stealing things. Two incidents of extortion by police. I see police extortion as the biggest risk in Playa del Carmen.

The Mayans in general are good people. It's tne ones moving from inland Mexico that have some ulterior motive. For many, extortion and robbery may be the bread and butter. This is typical in areas with poverty, so unless expats do things for their well being, there will never be complete calm and peace in Playa del Carmen.

Apart from the cops it's a safe place, but they can be very dangerous.
