The family of 4 cost mainly goes to education, health care etc.
People live with earning just 10000 INR monthly salary and have 2 to 3 family but they don't live a good life in kolkata as i noticed since my childhood.
In a shopping mall the lowest salary is around 10000 INR or 125 USD per month, so just imagine how hard it is to live in kolkata.
Try finding various products like food, clothing etc. on online stores like amazon and you will get some sort of idea about the cost of living.
As cost of living almost moves within those range like might be low or high but will not go too low or too high.

I can't say about others cost of living.
I am sharing mine.
I earn around 20,000 INR or 250 USD per month and after all expense without rent i save only around 10000 INR or 125 USD.
My house is a 3 story building.
Both ground floor and 2nd floor is on rent.
Rent is around 8000 INR or 100 USD per month per floor with in house electricity,24 hour water supply.

Now calculate on your own.
I live near DAKSHINESWAR, KOLKATA.
Different area has different rent but only that takes away large sum of salary.
Those who think living in kolkata or near kolkata is cheap are not counting the rent cause they are living in their parents house or something like that but they are forgotting that living in that also has cost - MAINTAINANCE COST.
In next 30 year the cost will rise more than 5 percent every year on every indian cities because of that stupid INFLATION.

My experience is that a couple with decent lifestyle need appx equivalent to US$ 1300. No bargain for that. In this you are not having any affluent top class lifestyle but just a decent one matching the crowd you meet at city's night clubs. This excludes any provision pertaining to kid/s if either of you have. Just a couple sharing same house, kitchen but probably not car as both of you t be having respective office cars. A romantic evening out with a show, candlelight dinner, pub and dance may cost you close to $125 appx and you can do that say more than thrice or four times in 2 months. Domestic staff, part-time driver will cost you about anothet $125. So with bal 900/950 you have to pull the entire month and its considered a economically decent lifestyle..not any extravagant.

Practically speaking cost of.living in kolkata is not less than 1 Lakh or INR One hundred Thousand. That is for Middle-Middle class for a family of 4 with a working couple and two school going children. This amount of 1 lakh doesnot cover rent as assumed own apartment with say 3-5K as Monthly Maint and 1 K as municipal charges paid yearly. School fee and allied expenses for two will be INR 30K. This may include private tuitions, and other activities. With 2 mid school going kids there are other sizeable expenses parties, entertainment, travel, events, never ending new fashions, gadgets, and so on. All these will eatup good amount if averaged out on monthly basis. A mid-lower end caris included but for limited use. Its in-hing these days to own a pet and there goes INR 1250 to all the way to 4K in its maintenance. These all will end up at around 80 to 85 to 90K and all of sudden INR 1.5lakh to 2 Lakh expenses come up once in a year or so that needed to be divided toonthly budget.
