I am a retired widower father with two daughters, Jan, age 9; and just age 16. Jan is my birth daughter via her now deceased Filipina mom. Judy is my adopted daughter but was born in the Philipines, and though now having a US Passport also has a birth certificate issued in the Philippines. I am interested in living in Olongapo because of its cooler and less humid climate. I will have about US$40,000 in cash and would like to buy a place (in Judy's name?) and have at least US$10,000 left over. My monthly income from the US Social Security Administration of US$3,000. Do you have constructive advise for us? With whom ought I to begin emailing? A Realtor?

A single person living in the Philippines can easily live on about $700usd to $750usd, if you are frugal. If you have expensive tastes, you will need a lot more. Some Filipino families live on far less...

You need more money then that. $2000 a mo would be ok

I agree with Jude Garbiel. It is best to get more information before taking the jump. good sources are wikipedia. I also saw this news website dealing specifically about Olongapo...www.subicupdater.com

Right now, it is the best source of information aside from facebook. cheers!

the Philippines is a wise choice, but one should be very aware about the local customs and norms, as it will help you assimilate more easily with the people and save you from unnecessary spending and costly mistakes.

Do remember that in the Philippines, family tend to be very closely knit, so if you find yourself enamored with a local lady, do keep in mind that casual flings are okay, but to live with a filipina is to live with the whole family, which might seem annoying for you but is standard procedure in the island.
