In the last one year the cost of food has gone up exponentially in Kolkata. Carrots this winter are selling for rs100 a kg capsicum at rs150 and one medium sized cauliflower is selling for rs50. The good side of it is that entertainment costs have actually come down. A movie in a leading multiplex comes for as low as rs60 to rs120.

You can easily live in kolkata with Rs.8000/m. And with 1600$/m, you can live life in kings' size.

India do not want its NRI to return and stay at calcutta. India will not get a lot from these NRI. These people get education in India at a fraction of cost(mainly free) in US/UK. They all are not the top ranker in clas. They came to foreign for their own enjoyment. This is a site not a site alluring NRI to settle back in India in their old age. Thanks Site

i think a major expense in any family is education, in US you pay through local property taxes, in India, directly to the school but the fact remains you have to budget that. I would say that it would be a good chunk of money we all need to be aware of as well

You have left out in your list the following essentials:
1) Domestics and chauffeur
2) Healthcare insurance and doctor visits.

I also think your cost of utilities is way low. I live in Houston TX (climate similar to Kolkata.) Our electric bill for cooking and A/C is $300/month for a 3BR, 2500sqft apartment. Expect the NRI to maintain the same lifestyle in Kolkata as in US (else, why return?) Rate here is $0.10/KWH while rate in Kolkata is Rs4.00 ($0.08)/KWH. So, INR 12,000/month would be a closer estimation.
