At night always insist that they use the taximeter by yelling METER METER at them. If the driver refuses just look for another one. Otherwise you will probably be charged between 300 and 500 yuans for the ride for which you would normaly pay between 100 and 200.

We took taxi from our hotel Baron Business Hotel Shanghai to PVG late night yesterday around 10:30 pm. We were charged CNY 300 by surprise. Driver says it was "overnight" rate. Looking at your fare estimate of CNY 149.61, it appears that the fare actually doubled. Is this standard proceduure? My mistake was that I failed to ask concierge. They don't take initiative to help - poor customer service generally in Shanghai. Great city, poor customer service - needs to improve mindsets.

We had problem with taxis In Shandgai. Everybody was telling ask to ask people from reception to get taxis for us and not to do that ourselves. This was to protect us from “bad” drivers. We have noticed that every time they had to argue with taxi drives to take us. We assumed that this was because we were taking short trips and maybe it didn’t pay off to drivers to do that. But this happened on the last trip to airport as well and this was a very long trip. I have now realised that receptionists were negotiating their percentages in costs of the trips. I didn’t realise that we have to protect ourselves from “bad” receptionists as well.
Nothing in Shanghai is the way it looks.
