I watched Tokyo Live until dawn, but I never felt dark or uneasy in Shibuya or Shinjuku.

Compared to the cities I grew up in (London) Tokyo is "safe" in terms of visible crime.

However, most streets in Tokyo don't have sidewalks and many Japanese speed like crazy, ignoring zebra crossings and sometimes even red lights. This can also be seen on highways as there are no traffic cameras... Which is very strange given the stereotype about them being law abiding. I've almost been hit by reckless or arrogant drivers in sports cars several times, so have my kids...

Another point is the crowded trains which are horrendous. You have the phenomenon of "chikan" or groping of women on trains in busy hours which is so prevalent they have "women only carriages" during rush hour. Also, there are often these passive aggressive middle aged men who take any opportunity to elbow you, push you, lean against you, block your way when alighting or sometimes directly barge you in the station or platform. Perhaps it's because they dislike foreigners or they just want to vent the frustration about their pathetic existence. But if you respond physically or verbally to such behaviour, even in self-defense should they try to attack you (usually if drunk) then you are the most likely one to be arrested immediately as a foreigner and can be held for 21 days without any legal recourse.

Not to mention a Japanese (usually disgruntled neighbours, colleagues, customers, or acquaintances) can make a claim to the police about you at any time - about anything - even about absolute nonsense - and the police will take action based on no evidence. Be aware!

I've been "Pearl Harbored" multiple times during my 8 years in Japan and luckily had decent lawyers to straighten things out.

Final point - my elderly father who grew up in London had his wallet stolen in Tokyo. He's been to 60 countries, even very "dangerous ones" and has never been robbed, except in Japan... go figure? To be fair - we believe the culprit was not Japanese, based on the spending patterns of the stolen card, but there you go.

i am young male, and you are white and woman it is probably nicest city in East/South Asia, but you are male it is not always. Tokyo is hard place for male but easy place for female especially young age. the happiness gap between young male and young female is horrible

We all know why it is safe. They actually don’t put up with the crap we do here.

Tokyo's still incredibly safe, but it is true that the influx of bad foreigners is making it less so, so it's important to stay alert around foreigners. Also, you must absolutely check your change when dealing with people from Nepal, for example, because they regularly steal your change, and anywhere in Tokyo (or Japan!), Indian men harass women and they often follow women no matter how many times you tell them to leave you alone.

Kurds in Kawaguchi are becoming a rather large problem for Japan, too, and they are known to be violent. Lots of mentally ill white people in Japan, too, and some have become violent, too.

I'm viewing the "Crime" page and can confirm that Japan is fairly crime free. Even in Tokyo, where I live. You can go for a walk carrying 20,000 yen with you at 23:30 down a deserted alley (although why you would want to do that is beyond my comprehension) and not have to worry about a thing. Even if you're a 5'4" female, drunk and alone.
In comparison, in the UK (my home country) you wouldn't want to be out and vulnerable like that at night unless you're with a male or group of friends.

Tokyo is genuinely really safe. I've visited many times and never had a problem. There are probably a few pickpockets about, and of course some crimes do happen, but sensible precautions will reduce the risk. Mugging seems very rare - it feels safe to walk the streets at any time.

I lived there for a few years, and I believe it's one of the safest capitals in the world, where you can walk the streets in the middle of the night without fear.
Anonymous on Aug 24, 2021:
In response to Rohail, its safe because of their culture of fear of shame.

I don't get how even with the high population, the crime rates are low?

Very, very safe -about as safe as you can get for a big city.
Not saying there's no crime, but so long as you are not a total idiot, you will be completely fine.

Tokyo is paradise for one and all! Most of these comments are ridiculous! When Western cities like Portland, London and San francisco are burning due to riots and Covid has hit the UK, continental Europe(Paris to Stockholm) and with Neo nazis and street gangs roaming the streets of western Europe/American cities intimidating people, robbing and raping as they please, homeless everywhere across Europe, Australia and Americas etc, Japan alone stands as a beacon of hope and positivity amongst civilizations. All people, including foreign women and people of color are extremely safe in Tokyo or anywhere else in Japan. Most of these commentators are probably angry whites who have'nt travelled beyond their trailer parks/flea infested shitties(cities?)

Safe, but women should just stay as far away from the subway as possible during rush hour. Groping is very common.
