But I wouln't recommend walking through the park (called "Schlossgarten")at night, especially the are from "Hauptbahnhof" (central station) in the direction of "Staatsgalerie" (another metrostation) where is also the Meridian Hotel. Not because I ever heard (or read) anything dangerous happening there, but simply because I feel this area might be a bit sketchy.
During the day this is an area where lots of drunk and homeless (looking) people, sometimes with dogs, seem to hang out in groups and also during the last two years I saw some gypsy family settling down there in the summer. But I want to emphasize that all these people seemed to be very peaceful, minding their own business. Just two times some of the homeless (looking) people from the group came to me and asked if I got 1 € for them, but when I said no, they accepted it and just went to the next person. I never was afraid that they would attack or rob me.
Also you can walk around with your electronic devices freely cuz lots of people here do. The only risk of getting it stolen is if you leave it unattended for a longer time. So the type of theft people might do to you is stealing without you knowing it, like pick pocketing.
Two expats from South America (1 from Venezuela, the other one from Sao Paolo) were so surprised that you can walk around freely everywhere, even as a girl, and with your cellphone in your hand and nothing happens.I don't know how representative they are for their countries but what they said made me appreciate how safe we have it here.
