All crimes in general have skyrocketed since 2019-2020.

It is a (very) homogeneous city, so any "physical attacks because of your skin color, ethnic origin, gender or religion" are not a thing here. However, petty crime has increased significantly over the past few years. Home robberies, stabbings etc. are increasingly common. harrassment by police, military and anyone holding any power is fairly common, especially if you're a vulnerable person. corruption in general is a big problem.

the “local kashmiri” commenting here is very clearly not a local. Do not take his comment seriously.

Harry, it's not as safe as u might think. People are helpful in general, but Kashmir is not very safe. The cases of burglary, rape, and murder are on the rise in Kashmir. Many cases go unreported in India because of fewer education for people. Corruption and bribery are very high in Kashmir. Kashmir is very safe for tourists,(not always though for some). Kashmir is a very unpredictable place. Since the 1980s the fight between India and Kashmir has made Kashmir a very violent place. Consumption of drugs is very high in Kashmir. Teenagers consume drugs so much that they can come up to kill or even rob their parents. There is a slight bias against shias and sunnis though

Well Kashmir overall is very safe to travel especially Srinagar, most friendly people you will ever see on planet and people treat you like their own family member. I don't understand why safety index is low it should be in 70s. One thing is that people do hate india and want freedom from them, if you are indian they might have grudges but still would help going out of the way. I would say its similar to Switzerland but less development and more beautiful than Switzerland.
