I've lived there for over 25 years, now I'm back in my birth-country Mexico/Cancun.
Definitely Frankfurt was more safe 20 years ago. It has changed a lot. We won't talk about central station - it's a mess. (Look at the YouTube Video of "Kurt Caz"...)

But the center is full of pickpockets, and there are many neighbourhoods where you shouldn't go, If you're not living there - Niederursel/North-West, Bonames/Ben-Gurion-Ring, Gallusviertel/Kriegstraße and his surroundings...

Frankfurt isn't the city it was 15-20 years ago. I feel more safe, even by night, in Cancun/Mexico.

Greetings

I come here every year for a couple months and walk the city in it's entirety while here. As a man I do not feel uncomfortable in most any area during the day. I've never been robbed, pickpocketed, or approached in any intimidating fashion by anyone. If you want the bad area just draw a square in front of the Main Train Station - Taunusstrasse, Kaiserstrasse, Munchenerstrasse are all rough until they are bisected by Weserstrasse. Those 9 square blocks are most of your drug addicts and undesirable interactions are going to happen. I caveat that with you also just never know what kind of late night, weird interactions that can take place in any major city when you use the subway and are waiting at those underground platforms.

My wife and daughter regularly move all around town until 10 pm and I never have any worry...and I say this as someone with a past history and training in personal protection detail, which leaves me with a bit more of a head on a swivel than most. At night if you stick to the more populated areas and don't stumble around like an easy drunken target you shouldn't have any problems at all.

As a German, I’d say Frankfurt is a decent city—as long as you don’t mess with the wrong people. Just try to avoid Taunusstraße, Niddastraße, or basically the area to the left of the central station. During the day it’s manageable, but at night it’s better to stay away. It’s not that something will necessarily happen to you, but there’s a chance you might witness uncomfortable things or run into trouble.

The area around the central station has a bad reputation, but the rest of the city is completely fine at any time of day. If you need to walk out of the central station at night, stick to the main street and stay more on the right side of the Bahnhofsviertel. There are restaurants and clubs where people party through the night since they stay open pretty late, so it’s actually not bad at all.

But here’s my advice: if you feel really unsafe or have concerns, the central station itself is safe—even in the middle of the night. There are always people around, including police and train staff, so you’ll have support if anything happens.

If you do have to walk out, just head straight along the main street (Kaiserstraße) into the city, and as a tourist, you really shouldn’t have any problems at all—unless, of course, you go around shouting “I have crack right here and I wan't to fight”

Comparing to London murder rate is silly because most London or Manchester murders are gang-on-gang and not relevant to ordinary people.
