Belgrade is extremely safe. Don't believe the sensationalist media.
Rarely will you be facing any danger of mugging, pickpockets, etc.
It looks shady, but that's Eastern Europe for ya.
Been there many times, never had any problems. People are mostly friendly and willing to help foreigners.

@Anonymous 'has a very corrupt police: talked in their goobeldy goop language while I was driving' Wow. Talk about open minded people. How dare these ...... talk their own language?!
I was approached by a prostitute in Austria. Wouldn't base my opinion on entire country based on that one experience.

A calm city on the exterior but has a very corrupt police: talked in their goobeldy goop language while I was driving and just grunted “money you pay”. Was accosted by a prostitute too but that’s common in any Eastern European city.

Overall, be vigilant but have fun.

Pretty much feels like I could take a lil' nap on a park bench at 3 in the morning and have no worries. I've walked great distances through Belgrade alone at night many, many times, and I've never encountered a single safety hazard from anyone.
Of course, I'm a man, but still. About as safe as cities get as long as you don't go around waving a hostile flag or something.
Belgrade has its share of problems, but safety ain't one of 'em.
