I find that there is a glaring lack of information here regarding costs for a person who drives for their commute versus has no car and takes public transportation. Yes, you can look at gas prices and transit pass costs but ultimately that doesn't show the whole picture. Cost to have a car are beyond just gas and in many other places (Cleveland, for example - I used to live there) you almost have to have a car and deal with insurance costs, payments, upkeep, etc. In DC, you can do without which will still cost a bit in transit passes but will save you SIGNIFICANTLY month after month. In Cleveland, I would pay a few hundred for a car payment, plus a hundred in insurance, plus parking (downtown this was around $100), plus about a hundred for gas - that's $500 a month before anything goes wrong with the car! Then you're looking at another several hundred dollars. Over the course of a year, I'd pay $6500 easy with at list one repair lumped in there. Here I pay $80 a month for my Metro pass and that's it! That's less that $1000 a year. Moving from Cleveland to DC has actually SAVED me money - who would've thought?? Transit costs are REAL, people.

Myanmar is tremendously daring and shameless to the extent of fabricating the following made-up news which is clearly against the weakest and helpless Rohingya currently being genocided by culprit Myanmar.

Myanmar Rohingya militants massacred Hindus, says Amnesty
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-44206372

It is absolutely unlogical even just to think the most helpless, almost annihilated Rohingya carrying out a massacre upon Hindu on top of themself almost being wiped out by Myanmar.

Myanmar should not be fooling around with other nation spreading fake and made-up news because other nations are not foolish neither to be easily cheated by the made-up news of culprit Myanmar.

Everyone should take a moment to feel in the shoe of Rohingya currently suffering helplessly who have clearly no future, thanks to the inhumane atrocities carried out by culprit Myanmar.

Time to unleash immediate punishment actions upon the greatest Evildoer Myanmar by showering it with the first punishment step of comprehensive sanctions on Myanmar.

Suu Kyi is the greatest humanity criminal responsible for the inhumane atrocities currently happening in Myanmar.
The atrocities happens only under the Suu Kyi government, not under the previous government so Suu Kyi should be prosecuted under the international criminal court for crimes against humanity.

While Rohingya are suffering inhumanely, shameless Suu Kyi's ministers are busy attempting to expand citis across the country including Yangon as well as places where Rohingya's land and houses were confiscated illegally to accommodate to more probably but not certain foreign investments, mostly coming from like-minded Communist China.

It is time to undo Obama's greatest history mistake and impose comprehensive sanctions on Myanmar immediately again.
And this time China must be punished to the extent of being imposed comprehensive sanctions if China violated US's sanctions on Myanmar.

The greatest virtue is to save a human race such as Rohingya from almost being wiped out.
This is exactly where the leadership role of US must be amplified that fairness and justice prevail internationally under US.
whereas China questionable, unworthy role of the permanent membership of UN, especially standing behind inhumane Myanmar upon Rohingya genocide is hopeless for the international communities so the permanent membership of China must be reconsidered whether or not sick China is worthy or fitting of the role.

Not only Rohingya genocide but also massive slaughter of ethnic races in Myanmar is so severe.
Obama made a great mistake removing a necessary sanction on Myanmar which makes the ruling military tyrant extremely wealthy by raising the property price as much as New York so with the wealth, the tyrant can afford mass-murdering military hardwares from around the world which are in turn used against its civilian such as Rohingya, many ethnic races unlike never seen before until before US removing sanction on Myanmar.
So US is responsible for all the suffering of Rohingya and ethnic races and has the responsibility to not only rectify its mistake of removing the necessary sanction but also to compensate the suffering by installing a genuine democracy government not kind of current fake democracy government led by hypocrisy Suu Kyi and then genuine democracy shall rectify not only the aforementioned suffering but also resolve the hyperinflation of property currently priced as much as the price of New York which is not affordable to most local and rent is not affordable as well so most working local sleeping like corpses lying next to each other closely without partition between them in the hall of tiny flat in the city centre.

US has many bad examples but are being unfortunately copied most of its inhumane policies by many countries.
Sooner or later people affected from around the world by stupid policies of US will have bad impression on US and consequently will have bad attitude to US so US should show impression of serving people as examples to show to other countries instead.
Following are bad apples from US
1. TSA approved lock which key can be purchased online so no security at all so this should be removed and instead confirm security through x-ray within 2 minutes after checking in luggage.
2. Weight allowance of hand carry luggage which seems to have no restriction until US interfered before and now China copied and go even further just allowing 5kg allowance which is merely the weight of hand carry luggage. US must rectify this and allowing no restriction with the weight allowance but only the size.
3. Visa fee which should be free as soon as being granted of the visa. Big nation doesn't lack fund to process visa but just need a security clearance. US also should remind other countries to follow the same especially Asian nations.
4. Obama's policies regarding Myanmar should be reverted considering the mere existence of pupet government, no full-fledged democracy in Myanmar. According to news regarding the Rohingya, imagine Trump being a member of Rohingya community where his daughter being raped and killed by a gang of soldiers in his hometown in Rakhine, Myanmar and his son in law got killed in an explosive mines trapped by Myanmar soldiers on his way from the border camp to his hometown to retrieve the dead body of his wife. How that Rohingya Trump in imagination would grieve for his loss..
5. Syria from which US must stay away or else supporting terrorist for government seat in Syria is kind of another welcome of September 11 event in US.
6. South China Sea which US must balance reasonably regarding the territories claimed by China historically in SCS should be China's but the water outside the territories isn't China's. That is the best deal that I think US can strike a deal with China.
7. World safety rule which US must abide by not giving in unreasonable demands such as NSG which India attempting to be a member but without willing to participate the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty for unknown reason. Obama is the worst president ever elected who broke laws.
8. Gun allowance which is for personal protection during unrest so it is time cancel allowance for big city where more harms have been reported endlessly than protection. Gun allowance still should be provided for remote place.
9. Trade war which doesn't matter to the millionaire Trump and his family but how about the 80% populace who still need affordable products from other countries like China, Taiwan. Cheap products which is not feasible to produce in US is much more beneficial to import than producing locally at a loss.
10. Grudge which country may have the most upon US..Guess Vietnam, Cambodia, Germany, Iraq, Palestine, Philippines.. Japan seems never come out of US head but this was the very nation unpredictability attacked pearl habor and even planned a failed biochemical attack to US. The first 2 nuclear bombs were landed on Japan to strike terror in Japan heart which helped ended its atrocities across Asia but never its grudge. So as to prevent another unpredictable attack from Japan to US is to control Japan not allowing it to manipulate the article 9 of Japanese constitution or else US may enjoy today and dream tomorrow without being aware of no more tomorrow miraculously because everyone in US might be dead before the next day by allowing an unpredictable force to exist.
11. Gas/oil price should be below US$20 a barrel as they were before Iraq war or are we ATM machine to oil producer? Very unfair which were all started by ignorant stupid Bush. The fair price must be restored for justice or else what the government is for...
12. Inflation which is not important to US at all as long as US can keep US dollar as the precious world currency. Trump; you can't have the cake and eat the cake too. Killing the inflation is a much better choice for US.
13. Security check at the airport must be reduced to return comfort to the traveller. Everyone at the airport pays tax so should be treated like VIP, not like criminals under the current situation. The tax which goes into the pocket as well as mouth of Trump as well as the rest of his teams so VIP treatment should be given to all the tax payers, wither small or big.
14. Beef where the government should stand with the American people not with the few business owners to rip off the people with the expensive beef. Supply is more than the demand so the price must be reflected properly to benefit American people. Ripoff done under Bush era must be rectified and justice must be returned to the people immediately

US dollar has been a precious asset kept by much people all over the world for safekeeping because the value of US dollar is pretty stable without loss unlike other unstable currency. That is the also the very reason that makes US very powerful and rich.
It is unimaginable to the day when all people all over the world no longer want to hold US dollar anymore because of a harmful policy to US dollar introduced first time ever by the current US president Trump. More and more people are dumping US dollar because the value of US dollar is falling clearly against all currencies of all other countries.
More inflation is a simple intention game of Trump but Trump is clearly heading to collapse the monopoly of US dollar game. With the collapse of US dollar by printing US dollar, US shall no longer be where it is today anymore so sacrificing inflation is clearly a much better deal for US and is also a powerful weapon to lecture other countries to treat her people fairly by removing inflation.

The first ever apology to the native aborigine from the Chinese-origin Taiwan president might be a sign that all the ancient and new Chinese-origin immigrants would leave Taiwan for good in the near future in order to restore the full independence of the native aborigine. So wondering when the Chinese-origin immigrants including the current Chinese-origin Taiwan president and her Chinese-origin colleagues in the new Taiwan government would leave Taiwan, indeed the sooner the better for the native aborigine to establish their own nation without a blood of Chinese immigrants.

It is indeed a victorious news for the aborigine all over the world so aborigine in US, Canada, Australia, etc should take this rare opportunity and immediately urge the ruling immigrants in their respective territory to follow the lead of the current Taiwan president and prepare to leave the mainland of their territories altogether in order to restore the full independence of native aborigine in their rightful territory

US stock market is the main culprit causing the endless inflation throughout the world.

Stock market must be a merely place where businesses can access the needed fund to enable the smooth operation of their business and people can invest their money into businesses of their choice through the stock market.

The problem is the oil is not a business but was incorporated into the stock market which results part of your oil stock investment fund being used attempting to continuously lift the price of oil in order to return profits on your oil stock investment and consequently with the higher oil price, consumer inflation kicks in endlessly. The ugliest part of the oil price is there is no whatsoever deflation with oil price falling sadly.

So adding oil to the stock is the grievous mistake ever done in human history which allows ripping off wealth from each surviving human throughout the world to the extent of survival has become a problem for millions of people in many parts of the world unlike never seen before in history because living cost is getting more and more extremely expensive now compared to the pre-Iraq war, thanks to the endless inflation jumping caused by the absurd oil price coming from the culprit stock market.

To resolve this endless inflation curses, government must immediately remove all non-business related oil and all commodities from the stock trading and place the oil under the special supervision of the Washington government with the price setting of less than 20 dollar a barrel to return justice and peace to all people all over the world.

Patricia, cost for a 2 bedroom home in the greater Metropolitan DC area (we consider Northern Virginia, much of Maryland, to also be part of the area) in the suburbs or one of the smaller cities is about $500,000-$600,000. One of the bigger cities/closer to downtown you can expect to pay 1 mill- 2 million in one of the residential areas. If you want an actual standalone house in or next to down town itself it's worse. Town houses are much cheaper, and condos (where you own your condo, unlike paying rent in an apartment) are cheapest, though you still have to pay building maintenance fees.

Unsafe neighborhoods are more likely to have apartments or homes split into duplexes or something similar, you are unlikely to buy a home there.

Public transport fees vary based on bus usage or metro trains. Buses cost about two dollars one way, though there are some places they aren't as convenient for- suburban areas may have an hour between the buses going to your destination, (though there are other bus routes too) downtown may take ten minutes. Trains can cost anywhere between $2-5, and are usually only used for when you want to travel bigger distances or for commuting. The commuter train, which is not the same system as the Metro, can go even greater distances, like connecting Northern Virginia to Baltimore or taking you down to Richmond. Bikeshare is even cheaper, and there are extensive carpool systems, and other alternative transport methods that cut costs. Driving on the highways means dealing with lots of traffic (we won the award, we officially have worse traffic than LA) but you can skip some of that if you pay the usually ridiculously expensive $9 toll during rush hour to go on special lanes which *sometimes* have less traffic.

I live in one of the downtowns and I've found that buses are great here and walking is super convenient. My parents live in a suburbs here and they are a little less pedestrian friendly if you want to walk beyond your neighborhood.

In general it is one of the more expensive places in the country to live, but there are always free events and free activities and resources available to the public so that cuts on some costs.
