These prices are accurate. I've lived in SB off and on for the last 8 years and, if you make less than the average noted, and are single, you rent a room in a subdivided house or apartment, paying anywhere from $600 to $1000 for it. Beer that costs $5 in L.A. costs $7-8 here.

Prices here are pretty spot on.
I own a downtown house, 2Bed, and rent it out for almost $4,000.
As well, I have a one bedroom house (converted barn) also downtown, and it will rent for nearly $2500.
If two go out to eat at a descent place, $50.
But the average income in SB is low, as there are many Section8 people (gov assisted) and tonsss of retires, so it throws off the average.
Those who live here and work are most likely either gov employees and commute into the city as they pull $50K, not enough to live in SB, or they are doctors / lawyers / developers etc, and make massive money.
It is a super super rich town, but it's worth it, as the mountains and beaches etc are just gorgeous, as is the walk everywhere lifestyle.

@VGV: It's pretty accurate. If you are alone and make the average you rent a room for $700 t0 $900 monthly, that's how you live here. And you can't retire here on an average SS pension.

One bedroom average rent in SB right now is $1500. How can you live here for this average monthly income? and how it is calculated - adding students and executives all together?
I don't believe this data is accurate? You can't retire for this money, it is only for young kids to make some 3-5 years experience and start at around 50k and then move to LA or SF to live life.
