How much can one earn working at the troll factory? Is it enough to survive in SPB?
#Nikita on Feb 08, 2018 :
@#m_65 Man, I've worked as an English teacher with zero experience and not even a native speaker, just learned a lot by living abroad. I've made around 30-40K rubles per month and I didn't even have full schedule at the time. If you have three years of experience teaching, you've lived in an English speaking country, 50K is more than doable. Depends on where you are from, of course, and especially your accent. If you have a horrible accent, your teaching experience was somewhere in Mongolia, then the 50K figure is unlikely. But native English speakers from all over the world can easily make more than 100K.

Best place to look at English teaching positions are private courses/language centers, they offer the best options for both students and teachers. is a good place to start.

I'm planning to move to Peterburg this summer.
I'm single and plan to stay in Russia. I'm a certified English teacher with over 3 yrs of experience.
I speak Russian and I love it, so the language won't be a problem for me.
So far I don't have a job offer (Haven't been looking really) but I've estimated a salary of about 50,000 руб/month.
How much should I be expecting to earn by teaching English in Saint-Petersburg? Will I have any opportunities for any private classes and in such case, how is the payment?
Can I maintain a normal life with 50K a month?
Any suggestion or insight is highly appreciated.

You can get paid $777/month running fake social media accounts to spread Russian propaganda online! We helped get Trump elected. Change the world with us!

Starting from 2015 if you want to live in Saint-Petersburg (SPB) I recommend you salary starting from 2k usd (120 000 rub) monthly. in my opinion you can leave here starting from this salary no less. It is enough for two person family. One bedroom flat ~600$ in center. It means two rooms and kitchen, because in Russia we count rooms without separation to guest room and bedroom. But more money is better. And we all spend money by different ways) so it just my opinion. I live here with my own flat, with 4 ppl family (wife and two kids) with 2.5 k usd and it is pretty enough for me.

Good luck!

Hi Manuel ,of course not, you can't live for 42.000 with your wife and kids in the city centre unless your company pays rent for you,of course. Even in this case it's gonna be tough. This salary is very low.
I rent apartment in city centre with my friend for 32.000 rub and its a good price. All in all I would say that citys economy is absolutely shitty and salaries are ridiculous. City Infrastructure , leisure public facilities are far from perfect.

About cost of Living in Saint-Petersburg.

1. Hi-tech and management jobs have big salary

About 10% of jobs in Saint-Petersburg have salary about $2000-$3000 (programmers, management positions and other hi-tech)

2. Taxi discounters in Saint-Petersburg

In the City some taxi discounters like Yandex Taxi (UBER clone) offers 15 rubs/km (or 15 rubs/min) i.e. about $0.23/km. Minimum order is about $6

Yandex Taxi have about 35% market share in this service in Saint-Petersburg. So this is normal price for anybody.

1. 120k USD i.e. about 10k per month is awesome here
2. not a problem to find, not so expensive
3. Vasileostrovski island area
4. City centre is safe, but some far districts not safe as well
#Mark on Jul 25, 2016 :
I've been offered a position in St Petersburg 120k USD + free accommodation & bills. I know nothing of St Petersburg, and would move with my wife for 2 years for this work.

(I) Is this a reasonable salary for a decent life.
(II) My wife has medical condition (Arthritis) and needs medication, how easy or expensive is this?
(III) What would be a good area to live (safe, quiet, etc).
(III) Is St. Petersburg a (reasonably) safe place, as wife will be tourist-ing while I'm at work.

Thanks in advance.

#Serg on Apr 10, 2016 :
I live in StPete and can tell that not all data correct.

Problem with prices is the quality of what you buying. Eggs can cost from $0.5/ten to $3/ten, dependung in quality - cheapest has toxins, antibiotics, growth hormones inside, expensive are organic.

Same with others - Mens leather shoes you can find in cheap markets for $10, but you can wear it out in a month. Many people buy those, and then repair them with their own hands. Also you can buy Gucci shoes for $2000.

Quality standards legally implied in Russia are far from European. Nobody is taking care to align them, because you can sell here under-qualified production of global economy. Like "made for third world". Local production is almost non-existent (except weapon and oil).

Even comparable ones, like McDonalds hamburger and Marlboro, are absolutely not the same quality like in Europe.

Europe in terms of quality all uniform between countries, if you take chain shops and mass-market. Russia is not - many goods come from China with so dispersed quality - from trash to highest artisan quality.

Hi Khalil. I think its possible. I have a couple of friends who got masters in graphic design and they got jobs in this sphere in StPete. But of course Russian is important.Good luck.

Hi i am going to study master in St. Petersburg after 10 days, i just have a question: is it possible to find a job after i started to speak the russian language very well? by the way my profession is Graphic Design.
#Anonymous on Aug 29, 2015 :
In answer to Люда 's question. Its hard to say where its better to settle. Prices in downtown are higher. But of course there is a lot to see in city center and almost nothing on its outskirts unless you like some fresh air and parks:) in terms of safety -no difference , its generally safe everywhere, no "bad" districts. May be its better to rent apartment in a newly built block of flats- where more well off people live hence nicer people. But here tastes may differ. In downtown there's a high chance to rent a flat so called "old fund" with failed canalization electricity etc.cuz city govt forbids renovation of cultural heritage in city center. Haha. Ok.
#alex on Aug 29, 2015 :
I live in St.Pete and I can say prices indicated are accurate. Salaries on st.Pete are low as far as I can judge. Most people cant afford eating out on a regular basis, for example. It s okay if you cook at home. Eat bread and eggs. University degree doesn't grant you a good job with good salary. This is very sad. In Moscow the situation is probably better. Overall prices on clothes, restaurants, entertainment are close to European. While salaries are not. Many of my university groupmates left the country. Now I work for a german company in stpete and my salary is much lower than German salary.that's crazy.
#Vlad on Aug 15, 2015 :
Prices are close , but depends where you buy food. I lived in SPB in June - July , 2015 and
spent 800$ for family of 6 on food and drinks.
Grandma cooked for us and I admit we even had total 2 cans of red caviar plus best Abrau Durso
Champaign methode wine almost every other night ( the rest of the boose came from grandma's dacha made from plums )
We had awesome time back home .
Taxi much cheaper than stated here 777-1-777
Taxi takes you from suburb to center for 420rubles , travel time 30 - 40 minutes no meter , price is fixed and announced by operator when
You call to order a cab

My husband and I want to move to St. Petersburg next summer with our new baby. What neighborhoods would you recommend we move into? Are some neighborhoods safer/cleaner/fancier than others? If we don't have a car, do we need to live close to the city to get places? I would appreciate any advice you can give!!

Hostel at a low price for backpackers, students and workers you can find here:

@ Chris - Learn the Cyrillic alphabet and then learn basic Russian, at the very least. It's an amazing, albeit slightly difficult, language. No students will respect you or want to learn from you unless you can at least communicate with them on a basic level. Good luck.

At the moment, the cost and Markets Transportation overstated approximately 2 times from reality. Apparently because of the collapse of the ruble.
#Dave Strider on Jan 08, 2015 :
it's so cold though why would you torture yourself like that
#Gareth Marshall on Nov 19, 2014 :
Hi all,
I've been living in SPB for a year now, I moved here with my wife who is Russian. I retrained as an English teacher and I am making between 35-50k roubles per month, but only working about 15-22 hours to make that kind of money.

I would say these figures on this site are pretty close to the truth in terms of cost of living(food clothes etc), but are well off the mark in terms of average wage and monthly cost of renting. Most unqualified Russians I speak to make around the 22-25k mark and even professionals I have met are making between 30-40k r with university degrees. As for rent, you can comfortably rent a 2 bedroom flat in the city centre for 35,000r and in the suburbs you could get a 3 bed flat for a similar amount.

Anyone who has been offered a job paying $10 per hour, or $1000 per month, or even 1000 Euro per month, I would say, if you are looking to come here to travel, that kind of money should afford you to have a decent life here, you will be able to afford to eat out and have plenty of fun if you are good managing your money. If you come to SPB, shop in the food market at Senaya or Vladimirskaya and look to share rent with a room mate and you will have an awesome time :-)
