Our water bill is quite high at 6,000 CZK (we enjoy frequent baths; most neighbors pay less than half). Electricity averages 2,500 CZK/month. We have super-fast fiber internet (1000/500 Mb/s) for less than 1,000 CZK/month.
We purchased a new car this year—a Kia Ceed from a local dealership for 510,000 CZK. One full tank of gas costs about 1,300 CZK. I also rent a coworking space at TechTower (with parking) for 4,000 CZK/month, and lunches in TechTower add another 4,000 CZK/month (about 40 CZK per 100g of food).
Life here is comfortable: there is easy access to highways and railways, and public transport is excellent (about 30 minutes to get anywhere in the city). Crime rates are low, although my garage was robbed and my bicycle stolen. In the city center, beer culture is prominent—especially on Wednesdays (students), Fridays (locals), and Saturdays, when many people are out drinking. Nightlife includes people intoxicated by alcohol, ecstasy, or methamphetamine, but it generally feels safe.
Traffic is usually light—even during rush hour, driving is typically the fastest option, with only occasional slow-moving jams. I also run a limited company (LTD) as a sole employee.
Healthcare coverage is excellent, with fast ambulance response times (less than 5 minutes anywhere in the city) and a top local hospital (FN Lochotín), which has outstanding neonatology care and two heliports serving the entire western region.
There is great coverage of post boxes, and Czech e-commerce (like alza.cz) can deliver most goods within several hours. If you order until midnight, most boxes have your goods by the morning.
For a family of four (35-year-old male, 30-year-old female, children aged 2 and newborn), with one parent working as a software developer and managing an LTD company, our total monthly living costs are around 90,000–110,000 CZK. We live a normal life—not luxurious, but we also don’t worry much about prices when shopping. If you are budget-conscious, don’t run a company, and live more frugally, you can get by on 70,000–80,000 CZK per month, but most freelancers I know have expenses similar to mine.
The most affordable city in terms of income and expenses in the whole Czech republic.
