Hi everyone,
What are your thoughts on the current situation in Turkey and the corona virus outbreak? Really no cases reported as of 08 March 2020? Just hard to believe.
#anon on Feb 02, 2020 :
aight guys eat kebab and live in istanbul. If you are smart and single you can live in istanbul with 2000 turkish liras as well as you can live in london with 1000 pounds. if you want a decent life without action and worry of meeting the months end, get an income of 3000, get a 1+1 for 1000 and live like a king. cinema costs like 30tl kebab costs like 20tl. if you want a more expensive outdoor activity, you can do it once in two days or three days. Ez tricks to live in istanbul listen to me I wont be here always. peace out

First of all, Turkey is a secular country not an Islamic country as propaganda at the western countries.
Secondly Istanbul is a beautiful place where anyone in the world must see before die, and it is safe as New York , London and other big capitals.

I'm offered a lucrative management position with an International company in Istanbul. They asked me to inform them my expected monthly net salary, but I have no clue what's a reasonable income for a family of 4 (7th & 4th grade children). Can anyone assisted with an estimated reasonable income for an Expat to live a decent life, live in a good and safe neighborhood and put my kids in an International School, which for sure has to be in the same neighborhood due to my understanding of the hectic traffic in Istanbul? Hence, job will only provide me with net salary + Medical Insurance and Transportation card.
Thanks a million :)

What's with all the insane conspiracy theorists trying to make Turkey sound like a war zone? It's less dangerous than Chicago or Baltimore. Or the meth belt.

I've just come back from Istanbul as a single female , let me just say I felt more safe there then here in London. The people are lovely. I stayed in faith and the area was beautiful. Very peaceful. There's nothing to worry about. It's a lovely city and the people were more than willing to help me out.

Turkish citizens follow Islam and are predominantly Muslim. They pray 5 times each day at Mosques and come equipped with prayer rugs and Allah is their purpose in life.If tourists like terrorists groups and prostitution Allah won't mind just as long as Allah gets to join the activities.
#Anonymous on Aug 28, 2019 :
I asked to see crime statistics but he said don't believe everything you read in the paper because the majority of reports are bogus and they're bogus for reasons we cannot report things that are grusome.
#Anonymous on Aug 28, 2019 :
I agree the U S or nowhere in the world is always safe. I can honestly say the U S is extremely dangerous no matter where anyone goes since I'm an American. So I'm not bashing Turkey at all.Abductions happen often in the U S and it normally goes on the missing persons files with little follow up normally. I reported it to the police on three ocassions I was almost abducted three times in good areas of Istanbul during daytime. The detective opened a filing cabinet and said atleast you're not amoung the women abducted in these files that were never found. He said we are under a gag order not to bring evidence of abductions to the public because it'd cause unessessary histeria with Turkish citizens plus it'd be bad for tourism. He didn't show me the documents of very few women that were actually found never alive ofcource but he said they were brutally raped beaten and decapitated. I know common sense plays a big role because I had to be very alert day and night especially growing up in NY where ISIS the Taliban and many other bad gangs native to the U S.are.
#Anonymous on Aug 28, 2019 :
Tell me how many abductions have happened for the last 10 years in İstanbul, a city of 15-20 million. As a born and raised Istanbul citizen I have never heard one(not that it never happened but I think it's vastly overrated.) Compared to mass shootings, serial killers on the loose, lunatics with automatic rifles running around freely, İstanbul is like a kindergarden in terms of safetly. But people don't go around and claim that US is just a sugarcoated version of the movie purge made by and made for psychopaths and rich people, instead we argue that these mere events are just a blip, a mark in the beautiful painting that is US. So, just stick to places like "levent, kadiköy, etc." and avoid places "tarlabaşı" and you'll be fine. Don't put to much weight on mere anecdotes by people and just look at the crime statistics and see it for yourself.
#Anonymous on Aug 25, 2019 :
Hello Kim# the American woman told you the truth about foreign women abductions by ISIS in Istanbul.Just wanted to give advice on one more thing Kim#.The majority of Turkish men cannot be trusted. They have turned abducted women into a business. I hope you saw the area where the room you rented is before renting it? Choose your friends wisely for your safety Kim. A friend Miray
#Anonymous on Aug 25, 2019 :
# Kim figure a minimum of 400 TRY per week food and transportation 600 TRY much better though per week.Istanbul most expensive city in Turkey.Did you know ISIS is alive and well especially in Istanbul and police normally look the other way? Crimes against foreigners happen quite often especially on foreign women.Go out in a group only during the night and have several people with you during the day for your safety. The majority of people will tell you that's not true but I'm an American living in Istanbul so I know first hand.I've lived in Istanbul two years now, almost abducted three times, yes it's that bad. I'm leaving Istanbul next month when my employment contract runs out.So far this year 263 foreign female abductions by ISIS in Istanbul some American some British and some Swedish women none found again,be safe.

Is it possible to leave in turkey alone and depending on 2222 TRY as a salary per single
#marc on Jul 23, 2019 :
i used to work for a big company in Istanbul myself for almost 2 years and it has been an awesome time! my flat was close to the Atatürk Airport and quite far from the City center. Luckily, it was kind of not too expensive (1 k) and i had no car during my stay, so i could get along very well with 2-3 k a month. negotiating gross salary, instead of net salary, is becoming more popular in Turkey, as well. so did i. for the net salary calculation, i used this website:

so, if you think of moving to Istanbul, just dare - it will be fun!

A quick calculation of cost of living in İstanbul

Rent for 3 bedroom apartmen -> The cost can be various up to your choices. If you want to live near sea side or good neighbourhoods you have to pay at least 2000 TL monthly. The cost can be reduced to 1400 TL. It is up to your choices.

There will be additional costs like heating price, apartment monthly fee, electricty, water and gas prices. So these total will be 500-600 TL average.

If you want to have cable channel or private tv box subscription, it will be 70-100 TL monthly.
If you want to have internet connection in your home, it will be 60 TL to 200 TL monthly as well.

Local beer ( EFES ) - > 15 TL
A meal in average restaurant for 2 people -> 80 TL

It goes like this.

As a married man with no children I have to earn at least 5000-7000 TL to live moderate life in Istanbul. If you have want to spend your spare time outside home and make acitivities you have to earn at least 10000 TL because current economy in Turkey is not good right now and inflation rate is very high. So every price is increasing day by day.
#Felipe on Jul 09, 2019 :

My girlfriend and I are thinking about moving to Turkey. She already has a job opportunity that pays around 4000 TRY and I have an online job that roughly translates to 2200 TRY.

Do you think around 6600 TRY per month would be sufficient for the two of us? We're really more of a laid back and stay at home on a friday kind of couple.

Thank you!
#Mentis on Jun 18, 2019 :
#Elahe You need 5300TL minimum. (Of course if you want to live properly.) Renting a home isn't cheap in İstanbul. If you move to home with 3 room, it's approximately 2200TL.

#parnia It's up to the university. If it's Boğaziçi or a technical university, you'll manage.

WE THE PEOPLE " have awoken looooook out !!

#Anonymous on May 23, 2019 :
It's a known fact that Turkish people hate anything that resembles America whether they're tourists visiting Turkey or living there. It doesn't matter even though American citizens have nothing to do with political decisions the U S government makes, but we don't care.A wedge has been driven between Turkey and America politically.Oh well no worries such is life. The downside for Turkey being they'll be dropped from NATO since stepping out of bounds purchasing items from Russia, Turkeys business obviously.Turkey is in for a very rough ride economically much worse than it is now, rest assured.Bad decisions are bad decisions Turkeys president made with numerous activities,no worries though. All American expats will disappear from Turkey whether they own businesses or not in the very near future,or lose U S citizenship.A major visa wall is being built especially for the Turkish people. But then again major visa walls are already completed for many countries around the world already.Enjoy the ride TURKEYS it'll be a very rough one for Turkey.

To #Umu I didn't need to read the address you provided to know how the experience for a foreigner is in Turkey, but I wish I would've read that before I lived there for 7 months as a retired Australian. There's alot of resentment towards foreigners as a rule from what I noticed during my time there.I believe some on here are from Turkey who just want to make Turkey look good.Simple things like ordering food at a restaurant as a foreigner will get you dirty looks and that's just the tip of the iceberg. After my very unpleasant stay in Istanbul I retired in South America. The difference was like night and day on a positive note.

Utilities per month averaging around 370 TL? Are you joking?!
Heating let alone is around that amount in autumn/winter time. Plus the electricity bills can smash you if you're not used to live in half-lit rooms. Cost for electricity is around 150 TL for regular usage. Water is another thing. Our people don't bathe regularly so it is common to have water bills around 30 TL but if you're the one that pays attention to hygiene, it can climb up to 50 TL.

OTOH, safety became a real problem in most of the areas hence many start to carry arms illegally. You can easily get shot after picking up a small fight in day time.

About overall QOL -> it sucks. You either get used to slavery, trying to commute between you daily job and home and working in commercial areas day and night in exchange for a low-to-moderate life or you better win at lottery. No joke. Do not expect to have a healthy social life with sanity if you choose to live alone. Your best bet is to marry someone and try to take care of your lives together.

Istanbul WAS a nice city before it's totally gone out of control.
I'm writing those lines as a 36 years old male and a member of mid-class family, who has spent his whole life in Istanbul.

The help people are sending is in the form of tourism and aggressive clothes shopping. People love the city as well as the islands and Izmir, the food, the weather.

I think there isn’t still a tourism culture, that can be positive at times since prices looks uniformed and there aren’t many tourist traps (if not the cabbies, use Bitaksi/Uber instead).
Customer service should be improved as well as skills in foreign languages like English and Arab (not weird that in tourism a lot of workers are Syrians).
Do not just stay close in your circle of local friends, be curious about tourists and expats as for the most they’re educated mid-class people from wealthier countries and can represent a vector of better opportunities than the whole city of Istanbul.
#Tourist on Sep 03, 2018 :

First of all, it's Istanbul 20,000,000 people live here, so all the other huge cities in the world you can find cheapest and most expensive things in Istanbul.
So I try to give some global example,
Subway : day of sub 10 tl
McDonald : bigmac menu 14 tl
Public transportation: monthly 180 tl
Cola : 1 lt 2.45 tl
Adidas sneakers: 180 tl
Jeans : 130 150 well known brands
Meat : 1 kg 50 tl
Vegatable : around 2-5 tl / kg
Bread :1.25 tl
Rent starts 1000 tl to ....
Pizza : 15 25 for two people take away
Restaurant: 100 tl for 2
If you get more then 10,000 tl you can have a middle high standards

Some one posted this above. Let me tell you this is cheaper than Pakistan at least.

Ok a big Mac meal from McDonald's costs 33 liras
Fuel per month for a car average 583 liras
Good restaurant meal per person costs
125 liras
Water bottle 250 ml costs 1.6 liras

In my opinion, 1.5 Lira in Turkey is like 1 euro in europe, in terms of the purchasing power (otherwise 1 eur = 5 lira!). So if you earn 3000 euro in Germany, I think you need 5000 lira minimum to have a similar life style. That being said, IStanbul is incredibly crowded and there is a never ending traffic problem among other things like safety, political and economical instability. If you earn in terms of USD or EUR you are safe.

In my opinion, Istanbul is a very expensive city. Even if you make 6,500 lira, that is only 1710 US dollars. I make 5,300 TL. That is about 1,400 USD. Rent is 2000 plus TL, which is $500. That means rent for some people is easily 36-40% of their income. I make more than 5,300 TL only because I teach private lessons. I wouldn't teach so many private lessons if my institution paid me more. However, I want to save money. If you can save even 700 TL a month, that's an achievement. That is less than 200 dollars. I managed to save 1000 TL, but it's difficult. Istanbul's very nice if you're a tourist or if you're earning dollars at some private school or you have a roommate, and you're making close to 5000 TL. Living alone is not affordable for many people.

I am a Turkish who is living in İstanbul.Honestly, Istanbul is very costly for a person who has low income. You need
to earn at least $1,000 to live as a person has a social life. But here the people are generally earning between $700-$900.If the family members are working,Surviving becomes more easy but its not mean living a good life.
Actress are happy here, footballers, doctors and highly educated people who erarns ver $3000 are very very happy.I am sure,Turkish people are not really happy what they are earning.A new graduated person is working at least 8 hours in factory or in a cafe under stress and earning minumum wage is 1404,06 TL at the beginning. If you are lucky you find a job with 10-12 hours And you can earn 1800 TL In city centre, you are able to pay your rent and bills with this stupid salary and eat the room walls. Its not a life. For a european Turist Turkey is anice place,if you come here to work, think more.

#Anonymous on Sep 02, 2017 :
I visited Istanbul in 2012, and these prices seem accurate, they may have increased in last year because of political instability and a authoritarian leader in charge who wants to take Turkey back to the Middle ages.

I went out to local pub/bar you pay 12 TL for half litre of beer,
Reasonable restaurant will set you back 50-60 TL pp for a meal.
Look out for sandwich stall's that sell "Balik Ekmek" which is local fish seasoned in a bread roll for around 5 TL, very popular with locals.

Even though I was a tourist, there are many great sights to see, Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, a cruise down the Bosphoros at night is an absolute must!

Despite all that i was acutely aware of the daily struggles local have, massively overpopulated, people desperate for every Lira they can get, much misery once you scratch under the surface.

In economic terms as a Westerner, local wealth is approximately half of Westerners.

Hope iv'e given helpful information :)

I have been living in Istanbul for two years now. I have never been to an expensive restaurant, have never bought anything pricey and have not even rented a bedroom every months (could live with bf's parents few months in total). I am taking the public transports very rarely. And yet I spent more than 20 000 euros in two years, and Had no income to balance, as you get 500 euros a months for 6 days a week, 12-14 hours job routines.
Istanbul is great to visit. Not to live unless you made lots of money abroad. No way to get money here unless you are an actor...

I am living in Istanbul and the prices given on the list are correct.
#Can on Jun 17, 2017 :
As an Istanbullite, the prices seem a little bit lower than they actually are. (around 20%-30%)
I am a student currently living in a moderate neighbourhood and I spend 3000 Turkish Liras and I don't really think about my bank account for 25 days. A regular dinner + a beer in a moderate district costs 18 + 12 TL. I am living in a 3 bedroom apartment with 2 other friends and paying 2400 TL for total. I am pretty sure that you cannot find a lower rent in a moderate neighborhood. For a student, if you like to hang around regularly and usually eat outside, 2500TL is required. For a family with 2 children, at least 8000-10000 TL (2000-2500 EUR) is mandatory covering all expenses for a "RELATIVELY COMFORTABLE" life.

Purchasing Power Parity is far too low, if you won't make 5k in a month for one person, don't consider moving here! everything way too expensive to income!
#David on Jan 29, 2017 :
Istanbul is expensive for Turkish people because their income is lower than European people's income. But don't worry TRY is worthless against Euro or USD . You can live in Istanbul with $1,000+ income easily.
#Selcuk on Jan 27, 2017 :
Recently Turkish Lira is loosing value against other currencies. Below is the exchange rate for US $ for the last couple of months. (Lost is around %30 since last September.) If your income is, say in US$ then your money is now %30 more valuable. Due to political uncertainity, turkish lira might loose even more value. Please keep this situation in mind while you do your planning....

you are exaggerating

your income specify your lifestyle

these expenses for the lowest and dull standart of the living

and yes i don't like to living in this country too...
#Baran Cem Zurnacı on Oct 01, 2016 :
750 TL - 1500 TL for rent 1 br house depends on area (if you want your home to be burglarized often or to have murderer neighbours)

200 TL - 300 TL for bills (if you have no problem with cold weathers or take a shower twice a month)

300 TL - 400 TL for kitchen (if you are vegetarian or on diet of death)

500 TL - 750 TL for leisure (if you just read a book on seaside without drinking or eating anything)

150 TL - 200 TL for transportation (if you have legs strong enough to go everywhere by walk)

"so you need at least 2.000 TL for a month to living modestly" is a big and ridicilous lie. You need minimum 5.000-6.000 TL to live with low standards.
