I am thinking of living in Hanoi or in a small town just outside of Hanoi. I want to pay no more than $100 U.S. for rent and am a single person. I will need transportation, mostly public.Does anyone think I can do this? I also want to change money to the Dong, and invest in the stock brokerage in Hanoi. Can anyone tell me if this is possible? I am retired but would not mind teaching English.. I am a retired high school teacher.

Beware.... The rates shown here for an 3 bedroom apartment for foreigners much much higher. We came to Hanoi back in November 2014 and paid 1500$ in Tay Ho...because there's the lakeview... After a million of problems with the landlord, who did not register us as he should and signed a fake contract (500 $) in order to pay less taxes and cheated continously on us making us even pay 3500 vnd per kw of electricity compared to the 2000-2200 vnd/kw for VN people we decided to change apartment and went a little more down south in a residential area called Times City where we pay 800$ for the same kind of apartment....

#GonzoBobH:

"Apartment (1 bedroom) Outside of Centre 5,000,000.00 ₫ - Is approximately 500.00 USD "

Not true - 5 milion dong = 230 USD.
Try to use any conventer in the future.
#GonzoBobH on Jul 24, 2014 :
"is in the vietnam currency or USA currency?"

Dong. A quick way to approximate conversion to USD is to knock of four zeros.

Sooo....

Apartment (1 bedroom) Outside of Centre 5,000,000.00 ₫

Is approximately 500.00 USD

I am hopeful that is helpful.

Cheers,

GBH

@peter: The price of car is right, Vietnam has a taxation of 200% (two hundred percent) on car imports.
#TNB on Mar 04, 2014 :
To Martin: VNese people usually don't tell you true about all of his/her income. Instead, we'd like to complain about low salary, or badly treated from boss...
#peter on Dec 17, 2013 :
Is the price of car right?
Too expensive
#Tharanga on Nov 24, 2013 :

I'm living in Hanoi and I can confirm that these numbers, at the moment of this comment, are not too far off. Quite close, actually.
#LV on Jul 11, 2013 :
Now USD is not allowed as paycash in Hanoi.
#Duong on Jun 21, 2013 :
Actually, in my country, we use Vietnamese currency (Viet nam dong: VND), but in the center city (Hanoi, Hochiminh, Danang ...) or in the travel places (such as Honglong bay, NinhBinh ...), we can accept USD.
