Hello there! I'm a web developer living in Vietnam. Most local people make 6 or 7 million dong, I'm making 15 million because developers and foreigners are on demand. Before this, I worked as an English teacher earning 500k per hour, so in a week or two I made enough money for the whole month.

Local people live in rooms that cost 2 or 3 million tops. But they are very basic, perhaps only a bed and a toilet. I wanted something with my own kitchen, bed and tv so I pay 4.5 million plus bills, for a total of around 5 million every month.

15 million is a really good salary for Hanoi. For a local I mean. Most English teachers make easily 20 or 30 million. If you are a native English speaker looking for an adventure, come to Hanoi! Finding job as a teacher is super easy (as of 2020).

If you make more than $1000 then you will be definitely fine. I make $600 and I live a local lifestyle (public transportation, visit mostly Vietnamese pubs/restaurants, shop at local markets) and I get to send a third of my salary to my family every month.

Hey,a foreign student lives near the city centre and rent a single room(comfortable),its cost 250 USD/month.That the common price Hanoi people want, they charge the more expensive price from foreigner.Normal Vietnam people rent house only spend 1/2 or 2/3 price of foreigner's.

I also live in Hanoi $225 rent $25 food $2 round trip taxi sounds right for city center where I live also.I could rent a one bedroom apartment two miles from City center for $150 month as I did for 4 years but I wanted to cut back on taxi usage.Rent an apartment on the 8 the floor minimum to cut down on noise and fumes.Mines on the 19th floor better yet.

Hello I'm a retired U S citizen,my income per month is 29,000,000 VNM.Is that enough to live comfortably for one person? Thanks
Tom on Dec 28, 2018:
This is more than actuality. Cost of living for single about 5-6 milion VND (for enough and comfortable life). With 20 milion salary can be seen as rich people :)

@Yoss: surely will be fine, depends on your living lifestyle. Thing is everything is cheap so it will be hard for you to resist going out, ended up being broke at the end of every month haha.
