I think it compares to California (not the Silicon Valley area, but close!). And also has a various landscape, resembling San Francisco's beautiful bay area. Vibrant by day and by night, most inhabitants can enjoy a great life with an average salary of around 2000 EUR in 2022 and rent is still affordable, when you compare it to cities such as London or Paris. And many students come from all round the country to study in Cluj-Napoca at a prestigious Univeristy such as Babes-Bolyai! Shopping malls galore, this is the city where we also enjoy a high number of tourists.

Cluj Napoca is a good city, not great because is not as big as London, Paris, New more of a middle to small city, it has around 350k people and around 5km from one end to another, for a middle type city is very safe in the city center and just safe for the rest of the town, you can party or have fun fairly easy and cheap, but the rent for 2 rooms is around 450 euro in city center and 400 euro for the rest of the town, 3 rooms is 500-600 euro..the salary is the minimum 450 euro, the average salary is around 700 euro. The monthly bills are around 100 euro on average per apartment and the food is the most expensive in the country..around 150 euro for 1 person per month.

Stop saying the average salary in Cluj is 2000 euros or more. It is not even close. Search it on official sites. It is about 700 euros net. And I'm telling you, with 700 euros net and paying rent, you can barely afford to eat. No nightlife, culture development and so on. Stop making it sound like it is a great place for everyone. Cluj is a beautiful city, no argue with that, but you do need at least 1000 euros to really enjoy it. And by the way, most young graduates start with 250-350 euros which is tragical, in my opinion.

@American expat to Romania: with that level of English it's pretty obvious why you left the US, first of all an American would never talk such BS, the wage in Sacramento is 3 times higher than Cluj, second of all 2000 euros/2200$ is a salary for DevOps or middle management, the rest of the population rarely go beyond 1000$. Cost of living is higher than it should be compared to the income, but being a young city full of students you can say it's one of the best cities not only in Romania but in Europe as well.
cluj the best city on Aug 04, 2019:
Cluj-Napoca is the best city with regard to quality of life in Romania.

The wages are about 2000 EUR per month. Due to this value it overpassed cities from Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic.
greek on Aug 02, 2019:
Kalimera from Greece,

the average wage in Cluj-Napoca is about 2000 euro/month gross wage.

Netto is around 1500 euro/month.

It is higher than in Greece.

Local purchasing power is better than in Budapest, Krakow, Bratislava..or Thessaloniki.
Reality Check on Aug 02, 2019:
The average salary in Cluj is NOT anywhere close to €2000... in fact, it's not even €1000.. it's around €600.

Cluj is a great city, for sure, but the comments saying that the average salary is anything like those mentioned, are absolutely incorrect.

Unfortunately, this perception has led to the rise of prices and expenses for everyone, making it almost impossible for the average Romanian person to have any comfort of life or even afford basic rent.

Foreigners need to realize that Cluj is still a Romanian city, a great one yes, but doesn't mean the prices should be like in Paris or Berlin.

Just been to Cluj-Napoca - such an amazing city with nice people!

I can describe it as modern, with unique development that unites Parcul Mare’s historic lineage with the thoughtful integration of modern design and urban living.

City center is great, with contemporary design and modern amenities fit for everyday urban living.

The residents and visitors of Cluj-Napoca alike will enjoy the serenity and natural beauty of city center and natural surroundings.

Comparable with Vienna, Berlin or Prague.

Servus or Hello to all people,

I'm Dutch from Amsterdam (the Kingdom of the Netherlands) and I impressed by the quality of life, education and culture or Romanian people from Cluj-Napoca.

It's the best quality life city from Romania and comparable to Vienna.

It's better than Italian cities like Rome or Venice.

People here are well known for their kindness, smart, multi-lingual skills.

It's 100% Romanian in all aspects and a living proof business, culture and education can make from a city success!

All the best in your Romanian adventure!

yes, indeed Cluj-Napoca (Koloszvar) is much more developed than any Hungarian city, except Budapest.

In Cluj-Napoca the average wage gross is more than 2000 EUR per month. Netto wages are more than 1500 eur/month.

Renting is expensive, but this city has quality of life. People are very friendly and open. Huge investments are made in IT and industrial production here because of best universities from this part of Europe.

Hungarian turist in Romania,

French expat to Cluj on Apr 06, 2019:

I can only recommend this high standard city - most developed city in Romania!

Yes, the high average wage is above 2000 EURO, this city is very fast developing with new airport over 4 million passengers with connections to France and other cities from Europe.

I like the city, has warm people, good wages here, high quality of life, better than in Paris or Lyon.

People can speak several languages English and German and French are usual.

There are so many companies like Porsche, Bosch, Emersson, de Longhi.. for expats is a wonderful city.

Come to Cluj-Napoca and enjoy Untold festival also.

Cluj-Napoca is a good city comparing it to Budapest or Belgrade but apartment prices/rents are ridiculous high(landlords are morons), traffic is bad and salaries are not as good as in Timisoara or Bucharest.

Romanianboy on Nov 05, 2018:
2000€ the AVERAGE wage? No way!
Maybe only for the very high educated people, the people working in IT and the elite...
American expat to Romania on Oct 30, 2018:
It's an incredible city - better than Budapest, Belgrade or Sofia combined!

Average wage is highest in Romania (November 2018) with 2000 EUR and is comparable with Sacramento - California, US where I come from.

People are more educated and speak several languages each. No wonder they are so developed! They speak Romanian, English, French and German in the same order! A lot of them can speak as well Italian (I have heard is something that Romanians can learn in 2 weeks and Spanish as well).

Most friendly city from Romania! Come and live here!
expat in IT field on Oct 12, 2018:
This is the best city to live from Romania. Wages are very high, for 2018 are about 2000 EURO average. For seniors in IT wages starts from 3000 euro/month.

Quality of life is the best from Romania here.
