Blagoevgrad is the best spot, without a doubt. "The town that has everything", as it was said in that town's promo video on youtube ( now unfortunately muted for the bridging of the copyright on soundtracks ). Best value for money in the whole of the Balkan region. With the best kind of climate. air is dry there, but overall climate-composition is not arid, as there is enough of precipitation - thank to the Rila mountains nearby, where or humidity arriving from the Mediterranians condense. So the hills and mountain slopes around town are all green and forested and not scorched by the Sun as in Macedonia or Albania. The delights of the Greek Aegean coastline and subtropics - in a couple of hours of drive away. The capital Sofia is in an hour drive ( or two and half of the train journey ). Air quality is acceptable ( at the north-eastern end, next to Park Bachinovo - superb ). Water quality ( even that from the tap ) is beyond of any compliments by its standard ( that's why Carlsberg established their brewery over there ). A massive three-course meal, with a starter, salad, dessert and a glass of wine/pint of beer for would not exceed 15 euros almost in any eatery in the town ( usually, you can get away with lesser than a tenner for the basic meal ). A pint of beer is 1.20-1.30 euro in the bar/pub. Bills ( electricity/water/garbage fee ) are about 20-30 euro a month, internet/cable TV package is about another tenner a month. Maintenance fee, if you own apartment is 5 euro a month and bellow. Taxi ride across the town from one end to another - 3 euro ( from Kaufland to Varosha - about 2 or less ). Local tax on property ( an apartment ), something like from 15 euro for a modest studio to about 30-50 euro for two-tri bed one - a year ! Great place to live in !

Thank you very much for the info. I have my monthly social security now, and and some savings from my retirement accounts. I hope to be able to basically live on S.S. without using savings except in an emergency, health or otherwise. I understand the weather does get warm there but not like South Florida in the U.S. where I am now.
What I love about most of Bulgaria and Romania too, is having real seasons, including cold weather, and depending, snow too. Something I've really missed living in a tropical part of the U.S.. I would love a chance to chat with someone familiar with Blagoevgrad in particular, someone who either lives there or spend a lot of time there in the past. Thanks.

The best way is to get a pension in the United States and to spend money in Bulgaria.
In Blagoevgrad can find apartment (about 50 square meters) - 2 bedroom, WC, bathroom and kitchen for 200 lv.
Car (second-hand 10 years) - max 5000 lv.
Winter in Blagoevgrad quite hot because Blagoevgrad is 600 km south

I am curious to hear from anyone who lives there, or has lived there, but even someone who is just familiar with Blagoevgrad would be appreciated. I'm in the U.S. & retired this past year, and am hoping to find the right spot for me to live in Eastern Europe. I have narrowed it to Sibiu Romania or Blagoevgrad Bulgaria. There is much to like about Blagoevgrad, from my research, but I'm curious to find out as much as I can before hand. I obviously would plan to learn the language, but it's much easier when you are there and practicing it everyday, so would know very little at first, and wonder if English only there would be ok for a few months? I can't tell from expat forums, but are there many expats (from English speaking countries, i.e.- U.S. UK, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, etc)? Any other advice or suggestions to make the transition easier would be appreciated! Thanks!
