Before COVID living in Budapest was pretty manageable but now the costs of meals, groceries, day to day items are sometimes more expensive than in France or Germany. It is a beautiful city but the prices have gone way up since the pandemic. Cost of living far exceeds average salaries for the region. There is a lot of negativity and anger in the population due to the political situation and generally poor pay for the people there. There are also problems with racism and homophobia that you may escape in the capital but not completely.

The quality of life in Budapest really deteriorated in the past 3 years and everything became so expensive...Hungary became a sh!thole.

I live in both places, Mexico City and Budapest. I have to say that leaving out polution, Mexico City wins hands down As for your grocery and other prices, they are pretty spot on. Groceries In HUngary have tripled to the most expensive in Europe in the last 3 years. Even domestic products. The biggest difference is the attitude of the people, it is very negative in Hungary, in Mexico City very optimistic and positive.

Intl school:
2-3 M HUF / year

Rent for 3-4 Bedrooms in a decent neighbourhood:
300,000 - 400,000 HUF / month

Cost of utilities, restaurants, services: slightly lower than in Western Europe.

What is a good salary to have a very comfortable life in Budapest for a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 kids aged 8 and 1 yr) moving from India. The elder kid will go to international school in Budapest. I do have home loan and other investments in India and these will continue.
