I was attacked and robbed in Tavira in October 2021. The incident still has not be investigated. I have been told by other residents who have suffered similar incidents that you have to be persistent for ten years to get an investigation and even then the results are almost useless. They are not compensated for their losses and the criminals are rarely prosecuted. I am not sure why there is the misrepresentation of Portugal being a safe country. It is widely known that crimes are not investigated. This leads the victim feeling that it is pointless to report crimes so they often go unrecorded. Tavira is one of the most corrupt, unsafe cities in Portugal. I do not recommend it.
