I strongly disagree with Chris and his comments that Skopje is very dangerous?!? That's so far the most tremendous lie I've ever heard in my life!!! I was born in Skopje and spent most of my time there before I moved in Canada and I can tell you, absolutely, by all means, that Skopje and basically the whole Macedonia is one of the most safest places in Europe! I've never experienced any incident, attack or any kind of assault in my life back there in almost 35 years! Having in mind that Macedonia is indeed according to statistics one of the poorest countries in Europe and the western part is occupied by Albanians, well-known troublemakers and drug dealers, and there was the war bursting in ex-Yugoslavia twenty years ago(but not in Macedonia), safety is at very high level there. I've just got back from vacation there and had a enjoyed thoroughly every single day, besides the fact that was very hot (about 40 Celsius), surely the only concern if you visit Skopje during the summer.

Be careful with taking taxis from the street or even from the bus terminal. I took a taxi at night from the bus station, he switched a 1000 MKD bill for a 100 MKD and demanded more money, and then he got physical, not only that, but he even took me to the wrong place, and I couldn't find anyone in the street at night to ask for directions.

What I could have done better?

1) Try to arrive during day time
2) Do NOT talk to any taxi drive who comes up to me nor take any taxi from the street.
3) Buy a sim card with internet in the shopping mall
4) Download an app to call for cab (there is no Uber or similar)
5) Show the exact location on google maps and make sure he follows the correct route

Other than that Skopje is pretty safe

I do not reccomend to anyone to travel here. Its very very dangerous even in the town square ,i was walking from the store back to the hotel and i was on the city center square and 4 men came up to me and one of them shouted at me in macedonian which i didint understand what they said and i asked them in english what are they asking me .The man told me Give me your hat right now! and i told him that if he does not get away i will call the cops on him.The guy didint listen and he pulled a knife from his pocket and started asking me for money. There were some people that were on the square and they showed up and the guys ran away .I had another situation like this which was near City Mall shopping center where three people were when i got to cross a street i saw 3 men following me ,walking at me very fast.I started walking faster and i got inside a local pharmacy and i told them to call the police, and the woman working there was like ,Hey its no needed they will go away! Very very awful country people are garbage .I will never return back
