Ponta Negra is probably the most popular beach in Natal. With this said, you will feel safe in the morning, but at night, the chance to get mugged may increase.
Ponta Negras has a lot of bars and nightclubs. I definitely recommend you to go there.
Ponta Negra/ Capim Macio are wealthy neighborhoods but Ponta negra has a small zone called "Vila de ponta negra" which is pretty dangerous around there (due to drug traffic).
This zone is close to "Corais de ponta negra" which is a known "luxury gated condominium" in Ponta Negra.
What can you say about living in Ponta Negra? So far so good for me, but it does feel quite rough. I am not confident walking in the street alone after sunset.
So, i will try to explain everything you need to know about Natal.
Natal is basically divided between Safe (wealthy areas) and unsafe areas (poorest areas)
Red light:
All north area (crossing the bridge),Felipe camarão, Bom pastor, cidade nova, cidade da esperança, planalto, guarapes, Quintas, Rocas, Praia do Meio and Mãe Luiza are red zones. it doesn't mean you can't go there, but there's nothing interesting there, and you will have a high % chance to get mugged if you're not local or show up jewelry.
Green light:
Lagoa nova, Candelaria, Neópolis, Capim Macio, Nova Parnamirim, Tirol are considered Wealth areas and you won't have problems around there, but be careful, criminals tend to drive around these neighborhoods to steal and mug.
Yellow light:
Alecrim is full of street markets, so you may feel a bit unsafe due to the environment but i would give a 50/50 chance.
Lagoa Seca is mixed between rich people and poor people (old people living there). 50/50
Cidade Alta/Ribeira you may see a lot of homeless (drug addicted). You may feel realy unsafe if you walk around some parts of Cidade alta/Ribeira. Similar to Lagoa Seca, you may see a lot of Private schools and rich people but also poverty mixed (specially when you're close to the train line)
If you need more information about the right streets you should avoid, let me know! I can show you on Google maps!
