Leipzig is generally fine as it is a a city with a large university that also offers natural science bachelor courses for international students (the one and only in Germany), which is why there are a lot of international students here.
Connewitz (with the leftists) and the Eisenbahnstraße (all the immigrants) are the areas where few violent scenes are sometimes held.
Leipzig belongs to the far right winged state called Saxony, hence quite a number of right wingers here. However Leipzig's green party is strong, which is why Leipzig is considered the "Green Island of Saxony".
A lot of immigrant clans have built up over the years, causing disputes among other immigrants and other people (occasionally). Drunk and a few homeless Germans can also bother people quite a bit, especially in the city center and at night. Over the years, the immigrants have also started to disrespect other people (by claiming their way of living is the right way of living), which is also a reason for the disputes. They still have to learn that Leipzig is not the Middle East or Istanbul just by having a million Kebab shops open.
Maybe a few unusual stares from some people if you are not German-looking, but nothing really happens if you just don't care and look away minding your own business.
Generally speaking: Leipzig is becoming a more left-winged city in an increasing right-winged state. Future outcomes may give surprises.
