Ghent is mostly safe during the day but there are some areas that you should definitely avoid.
Brugse Poort, Muide, Nieuw Gent and Dampoort should be avoided if possible, especially at night.
Rabot has been seeing improvements as of recent but I wouldn't risk it.
Most of the areas mentioned don't really have anything noteworthy for tourists anyway so there shouldn't be any reason to go there.
The train station Gent-Sint-Pieters also attracts some weird people, but it's generally safe.

Ghent is a safe place depending on where you go.

If you are at tourist places you will 100% be safe but other places outside the inner city are not that safe.

Some of these are: Brugse Poort, Nieuw Gent, Rabot, Dampoort etc.

Theres alot of drug/alcohol use and violence in these places, women tend to get raped quite a bit at night.

Good things is if you're a tourist you don't need to go to these places anyway so you probably won't encounter any of these problems.

I live in Gent and do not agree with the rate. I'm a woman and I do not feel safe in the city. Ghent is not safe even at night. I was born here and I'm 57. I saw it change, prices went up with the Euro and things got worse every day a bit more. A lot of poverty,a lot of homeless people, a lot of alcohol related issues,a lot of night noise, A lot of stank/odor. It used to be very safe here, now it's not anymore.
