Gdansk is quite safe place to live. There are lot of foreigners living and tourists visiting.
I've been here for 30 years and I have never been mugged. Only avoid Stogi, Orunia Dolna at night and you will be fine.

Gdansk can be very dangerous at night, if you are black you should stay home at night, or your ass get beat up.

Poland is not safe at all. Low enforcement will not help. State protect criminals and often low enforcement is involve in the criminal activity.
