Chiang Mai is very safe, but please don't take tuk-tuks and red pickup taxis. These drivers are basically retired members of the underworld, stay away from them. It is reasonably priced to use the Grab app.

I am a foreigner living in Chiangmai for a few years. This city is totally absolutely safe (although tourists can be scammed sometimes but really rarely). Walking anywhere alone is absolutely safe at any time of day or night. The only threat is stray dogs, especially at night in alleys and on small narrow streets However, there's just no violent crime here. Stealing is also extremely rare
