People have misleading perceptions about cities like this. Although you wouldn't think it, Washington-Baltimore had a lower murder rate than Chicago, Philadelphia and Houston in 2022.

Somebody mentioned 'San Salvador' below (as in 'city'). Soyapango is actually a neighborhood of San Salvador and Apopa is a dormitory town of the city. Much like Washington-Baltimore are considered by most serious sources to now be the same area (an urban sprawl of around 8 million). Before conjoining with Washington Baltimore had just over two million residents, not the 600,000 often cited in the Baltimore Banner and other media.

Folks often use populations for cities that are not accurate.

In the suburbs (most of Baltimore County and beyond), the main problem is theft from cars. However, it's safe to walk alone at day and night.

Crime is much higher in many areas of the downtown of Baltimore. There are lots of shootings, murders, drugs, etc., and it is definitely not safe to go around alone. If in doubt, it's a good idea to ask for advice from the locals.

Referring to A, that’s because the government is pushing out criminals/poor people out of San Salvador. Baltimore is not worse than the surrounding cities of San Salvador (Soyapango, Apopa)
