I am living here for a year now, I can tell you that the rent in not so cheap. Here is the deal, you can find very cheap rent but a huge lack of infrastructure, when I mean this, I mean that the street where you live might be dirt, no service for garbage, no light in the street. you can find a vast offer and pay less than 300 usd per month for a 120 m^2.

If you want a nice place, this means a condominium, so lets say a 120 m^2 located 03 bedroom in a nice place, you will pay at least 550 Usd per month + the expenses (garbage, taking care of swimming pool of common areas, etc) this cost at least 80 USD

This is maybe far away from downtown (i dont like living i downtown anywhere).
If you like living close to downtown or in very nice condominiums you can pay at least + 1500 usd per month this would be 220m^2. If you come from US or CAnada or Europe in general, understand something very important, WHAT YOU CONSIDER "STANDARD" IN SOUTH AMERICA ITS HIGH CLASS. So if you expect to have a nice house you will pay at least 1200 USD per month.

Sorry guys if you think this is very cheap, I just arrived from Sao Paulo, and of course Brazil is more expensive, but make no mistake, this is not so cheap, I am about to relocate to Monterry - Mexico, and I can already see that cost of living is quite the same compared to santa cruz - bolivia.

The weather in santa cruz is HOT AND HUMID !!! when I mean hot, I mean FUC.. HOT.
So please consider:

When renting apartment:

Consult with an architect friend, orientation is very important, you see, you must consider that your house has the most amount of ventilation and the least exposure to the sun!
The house must have high roofs! other wise you will live inside an oven! I see "new" designs of houses full of huge windows, never rent this ones! you will live inside an oven!
Do some research regarding best conditions for very hot places, I made this mistake the first moths, let me tell you that A/C would be on at 16ºC and the room was 37 º C, too hot.

Can you get along with insects? this is like manaus - brazil. So you must fumigate you house 1 every 3 months. Chikungunya and Zica are present. TAKE CARE!!!!

Will you have pets (dogs)? consider taking your dog to the vet every month, despite having a nice garden, this is a jungle, so you have all the insects you can imagine. Dogs tend to suffer, but if you have patience you can have them. I have a cat and it had some "virus" or what ever on the skin, had to treat it for 4 weeks.

Driving, I would say it is more like India, so please take care, no respect for traffic norms.
Buying a car:

Consider minimum an SUV e.g. Mitsubishi outlander, Suzuki Vitara, Toyota Rav4. You will pat + 30.000 USD for a new one.(cars are expensive)

Are you comming with your wife? buy 2 cars. YOU MUST HAVE.
Understand that public transportation is cheap but no comfort, no security, no bus stops... imagine INDIA + imagine walking under the sun with 38ºC and 80 % humidity, yes the whole year + rainy season means tropical storms.

School, again if you want american standards you will pat at least 1000 UD per month per child.

Are you hired and want your wife to look for a job? Honestly, good luck, no industries and avg. salary is under 1000 USD per month, they work even on saturdays, no respect for the worker.

The good companies in bolivia in general must be aroud 10 at the most, the rest is very informal, so think that your salary must compensate this.

Nice thigns:

You can eat BBQ every weekend
Night life is nice, if you are single or married, due to weahter, at 2 AM you are with Tshirt and shorts.
It is safe in general, very quite. Dont want to get in trouble? dont sell drugs, dont commit crime, dont show your Iphone 6+, dont go where it is not safe... you know... like any place in the world.
Travel, nice places to go on the country side.
Friendly people
You can buy land, far away from the city, it is still cheap.

Police and every constitutions here are corrupt, so have all your papers in order, other wise expect to pay some cash, and yes all instututions are corrupt.

So, a salary for 2, living smoothly,(this is so relative...) I would say at least 3000 usd per month.
If you want US standard of living, + 5000 per month.

So in the end, if you come to santa cruz to save money, or you lower your quality of life, or you make at least +5000 usd per month.

If you come with your kids, lets say 2, I would say you must make at least 7000 USD per month.

OK I hope someone reads this, I hope I can help, I know what it is when you have to make a decision and you lack information.
