Pisa is a city located in Tuscany, one of the most beatiful lands in the world. Cradle of renaissence, near the coast and near the Alpi Apuane mountains, this place is less "exclusive" than cities like Siena or Firenze where wealthy people buy their villas so it's more affordable to live in. Still it's very expensive compared to other italian cities with equal/superior attactions/services so you need to be rich at the very least. Like every italian city the food here is cheap and tasty, you won't have problems on that part. The high costs comes mainly from house prices that are crazy and totally unjustified. If you can face the house costs all the rest won't be a problem (provided that you don't depend on italian public services).

The city is literally owned by an oligarchy of rich and wealthy people that owns most of the houses in the city. The major is traditionally expression of this power and as such it contributes to keep house prices high at the expense of services wich are quite poor. House renting to students is the main business here. This works well thanks to the high reputation of "Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa", one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Although the school accepts a very limited number of students, it attracts thousands of youngsters from the rich but underdeveloped southers regions of the country. Who can't enroll the superior school usually ends into the other city university the "Pisa University" which despite being just another university like many other in Italy costs less than big universities in big cities like Milan, Rome, Boulogne or Florence and is plenty of southern people as opposed to the other top small city universities like Padova or Trento. This continuous flow of rich students from the south grants the local oligarchy a constant yeld through renting. If you move here, renting will be the only remarkable cost. For the rest the city is very nice and most of all alive, which is rare for a city that small. You can expect to find young people around the city center at any hour of the night. Public services are poor and expensive, but still in the average for an italian city. Forget the car unless you are so rich to grant yourself a box in the city center or give a damn to fines/parking costs. In my humblke opinion, this city might be paradise if you are a young student who doesn't care clubbing. The wealthy people will prefer Siena or Florence or even Lucca. If you are a middleclass worker with family know that Pisa is your hell: a tasty fiorentina steak with a good glass of Chianti wont be enought to make you forget taxes, , life costs, crime and the lack of services for you and your childrens.
