I would to give an update on my recent visit to Marbella (June 2016)
It s incredibly clean and in general good level of people. I always say that when a person had a bad experience tends to give a general negative experience and put a stain on everything else. Marbella has one of the best weather in the world and still less expensive than many other cities.
GO MARBELLA!

We have lived in Marbella since September, 2007. It is not dirty as the German has suggested, rather it is a pretty and well-kept city of plants, parks and gardens. It does have a fair amount of drug-related crimes which rarely affect private citizens and rarely get solved (but sometimes they do!). Also suffers from overbuilding and plenty of people in this industry quite willing to cheat you. As anywhere, buyer beware! If you plan to buy, get a reputable solicitor who is not connected with the seller in any way.

Jack has given a fairly good portrayal except that the main coastal highway, the N340, is now a 4-line roadway where the average speed is around 90kph.

Rents have come down. They are actually higher in the suburban areas than in center town (with the exception of beach front properties). My friend lets a fairly new 3-bdrm apt for €500/monthly in a very green area with many amenities (several pools, clubhouse with restaurant and gym, free golf course, tennis and boules courts).
