Cost of Living in Madrid

Showing average salaries isn’t a good indicator of cost of living, especially in a place like Madrid where you have a very small portion of very high earners pulling the average up. Better to use the median (central tendency) which is closer to €1800 per month.

To the guy saying 2.200 its not the average. It is the average. It accounts the city centre where most big corporations and govt institutions lay. Meaning that if you live in the city centre that its the average. If you live in the outskirts everything goes down, including salaries. Perceived average and real statistic average are clearly not the same.

For anyone wondering, the avg. monthly net salary is under no circumstances anything near €2.200 in Madrid (or anywhere in Spain); most people here make between €1.200 and €1.800; some make between €1.800 and €2.200, and a few select make more than €2.200. If you make anything close to or above €3.000, you are definitely in Madrid's top 1% of salary makers. Like anywhere in the world, your industry matters, so naturally, if you work in anything related to IT, you'll make more than the average, but to say the average net salary in Madrid is €2.200 is just crazy.

If you pay the rent for 6 or 12 months in advance, you can find a two bedroom in city center for around 1000 euro / mth

The cost of living prices stated here are not updated...markets, restaurants, utilities, etc..you should review all these prices ..are really untrue...prices currently are much higher than that.

The gross average salary in Madrid is 29.000 euros, net becomes around 1800 per month. So salaries are not as high as reported. Check the national statistics institute for more information

I have offered 4k/month gross, is it good for a family of 4 with kids primary schooling etc...

Beware of thieves! Madrid is full of thieves and they will try to steal your stuff by picking your pockets. Very dangerous city and I would not recommend to visit it.

Average salary of 2600 net euros/month? Kidding right? 2000 net at best

Housing prices and rent have been increasing much quicker than salaries for years. Since last two years it is becoming unsustainable and I already know many people leaving to cheaper cities even provinces.

I lived in Madrid for 8 years during the 1950’s. I still consider those years the best of my life. I wish I can return to live again in Madrid my ideal city. Continue giving us updates. Love you clara

Spain should've never changed from the peseta to the euro. The euro doesn't have a good track record plus having the euro doesn't allow for Spain to enhance their former currency to market standards.Even if the economy isn't doing well Spain is locked into dues being paid for using the euro. Spain, Italy, Portugal and other countries are feeling the pinch of the failing euro a no win situation.

Spain is just a warmed over version of Venezuela.

Cost of living in Madrid is very flexible. Its not about your salary but on how you spend it. The most expensive commodity in Madrid is that thing called "convenience". If you prefer to be convenient by just going to restaurants instead of cooking your own food, then it would cost you much. If your prefer to take taxi rather than taking buses (monthly pass, its cheap), then, my friend, again, it will cost you much. If you prefer to shop at usual brand stores in the city streets/malls rather than going to factory outlets just outside the city, then it would cost you. In summary, before moving to Madrid or in any city, decide first what kind of living standard you would like to have. Hope this helps.
