I'm an American living in Kuching. I'd say that the apartment prices for 3BR rental are a bit low in city and outside. The Utilities for a 3BR are a bit high I pay RM100 for a 3BR apartment, though I'm careful about not leaving AC on when I'm out. Water is RM4/month. You can Uber/Grab anywhere from downtown to airport for between RM4-9. A tin of domestic or Chinese beer is RM5-7. Vending machines in many apartments or bulk charge RM1 for a 333ml soda, ice tea, water.

It is quite difficult to start up a business without a local partner. And the capitalization increases for a local + foreign partner. Technically foreign investors are not allowed to work, although they can train, supervise, and review the books. You often find the foreign investor doing a lot of training and supervision. Salary is taken out of profits.I wouldn't consider starting a business here without a visit and talking to many foreigners involved in such businesses.
