Life never been expensive only that human being made it complicated for themselves.
I mean that if you are planning to head for any place in Africa and want to stay, believe me in just two months or after you get used to the local people, you will realise that there is no other place a human being should stay for life if not Africa.
It's not perfect yes, but listen:
As we all know, life is like a baby growing.
You may be rich or middle class like myself, but when you go to a strange country my dear, your money won't help you but the community can.
Take at least one or two months, learn how the people live...try to socialize...
Also remember that you are not at your native home.
Spend less as your habits.
If an African family of 3 can survive on $55 a month, but YOU, you are just alone why don't you spend $40 instead of $70?
(This's just an example)
"There are things that we don't really need in our day to day lives" and still life continues.

After doing much research on Africa, I decided to go and visit Mbarara the second largest city in Uganda.
I had $12000 USD with me, my wife and two kids.
On everything, rent food and...we spent almost $340 monthly for 3 months.
However, after we became familiar with the people, we opened a small business with only $2200 USD and kept the rest of our money just in case.
Then, after every two to three weeks we put more money on our business...should we go back to America, hell no. We are done with it.
Today not only Mbarara but the entire Uganda is our home.
Within two years, I managed to but a small land, built a three bedroom fantastic house, an account of about three times what I had when I first came here....and life continues.

Point: All together, monthly I spend less than $2000 including school fees for my kids now three of them.
In addition to this, nowhere is perfect in this world though, it's up to you.
People will tell you of the wrong side but Africa and even show you videos of poor survivors.
But how about that life in New York, Chicago and...?
Hell no..!
Africa has its own style just like Europe does.
Africa is nice no matter what.
Just decide and make a move.
Africa is there for everyone unconditionally.
