Arun: with 28000 in hand you can live comfortably as a single person but with a non-working wife and kid you will struggle a bit. At least you should not expect to save much. Regarding changing jobs, it might be a challenge if you only can work with embedded systems. But if you broaden your field of expertise it will get easier.

I have an offer of 28,000 (in-hand) Krona in Gothenburg? I have 8 years of experience in embedded systems. I will be living alone for a year and then bringing my wife and kid. Is this salary good. And can I change job once I am there.

Does 2700€ after taxes enough for 2 person family?
Jose on Nov 04, 2019:
Do you think a salary of 35k is enough for one person? I wanted to live alone
GetReal on Jul 10, 2019:
Kudos to Numbeo for adjusting their average prices, although for certain categories such as Rent, the maximum price in the green price range is more realistis.
KHK on Jan 10, 2019:
So, if you have a family of 6 (2 adults and 4 kids) can you even find a place to rent ? Or how far do you have to get out of the city Gothenburg?
Thanks for any honest input / comments.

Re: cost of apartments. Check a site called boplats. Right now they have studios for about 7000 SEK at a place called waterfrontcabins(dot)de.
EJW on Sep 01, 2018:
In response to #GetReal about rentals in Gothenburg. A bit of explanation. Yes, there are apartments for 8000 SEK for a one-bedroom but to actually get one of those apartments is a whole other story! I got my one-bedroom rental in the city for just under 7,000 a month after being on a waiting list for over 4 years and after 2 other people had turned it down, incredibly enough. Now this building of only 20 apartments has converted to a co-op, which means the monthly cost is now closer to 10,000 SEK because of amortization and interest plus monthly dues. More and more rentals are being converted to co-ops and renters who want to move often trade apartments. This means if you are lucky you can sublet from someone and you will most likely be paying quite a bit, depending on what their monthly costs are. (It is illegal to overcharge secondary renters—the rent should reflect the actual costs of the apartment owner, though he can charge a bit more if it is furnished.). So #GetReal is correct. For a new person in town it is really hard to get an apartment and, if you do, it’s probably going to be expensive.
GetReal on Jun 23, 2018:
I appreciate Numbeo for providing this service but regarding the cost of living, some of the numbers presented are simply unrealistic even if they may be statistically speaking accurate.
For instance the rent prices in Gothenburg are totally underestimated. Practically speaking there is no way you cam find an 1 bedroom apartment in the city center for 8000 kr. You can expect paying at least 13000 and even at this price ypu are competing with 50-60 other people. For 8000 kr you can though easily get a room in a nice apartment
Its the same for bigger apartments. For a nice 3 bedroom apartment expect at least 20000 kr.
Otherwise prices of commodoties and food are realistic.

35000 gross a month will leave you with about 26000 after taxes which should be enough for you and the wife if you find a modest apartment in the outskirts. Just dont count on saving too much.

Hello All,

I am currently working in an Indian IT firm and planning to move to Gothenburg in 4-5 months.
The salary offered is 35000 SEK.
Is this sufficient to live in Gothenburg with mid-range apartment and considering all the living costs there.

Please help me with some more details.

It's livable but not easy with a salary of 35k.. use and use the wage calculator to arrive at your almost correct post tax income.. should help you get a better picture
Seemab on Mar 15, 2018:

This is an enquiry for my friend. He will be moving to Gothenburg permanently in another 4 months for a salary of 35k sek. He will be bringing his wife in a year's time. Considering initially she will probably not be working, if he were to rent an apartment in the outskirts, will it be possible to live with the salary quoted?

Also, to those who feel living in Sweden is bad. Apart from high tax what reason do you have for not recommending living in Sweden?

Is it still difficult to find a place to rent?

Thank you in advance.

Hello, I wanted to know how much will the cost of living be for each person in this city? I'm not a student,
Henrik on Oct 29, 2017:
Luciano:For you alone, 21000 after taxes should be enough but with a family of four taking into account the realistic price of a 2 bedroom apartment(when you need to get one fast)then food, kindergarten ,clothes and school materials for kids, I would say at least 32000.
Luciano on Oct 05, 2017:
Reading the qauestions below, there is one of those that is exactly my situation
I got an offer from Swedish automotive company and thought of moving to Gothenburg Sweden. What is the salary expectation(Gross) should need to survive in Gothenburg with not working wife?
I have 2 kids (3 and 6y) and I would like to know what would be an average salary for a good life there?
TheTruth on Sep 26, 2017:
@Daya: With an engineer salary you can live great in Gothenburg by yourself. If you have a non-working wife....well it usually depends on how demanding she is :), for instance nice apartments are very expensive. Plus if you have 2-3 kids with you, your budget on an engineer salary can get very tight.

What is tax percentage for engineer jobs in Sweden?
BoomBoom on Sep 12, 2017:
#Milan...If it is not too late and you already have negotiated a salary. Taking all the living costs into consideration and the fact that your wife will not work in gothenburg( at least in the beginning) I would suggests that you only accept salaries over 50.000 SEK
GetReal on Sep 12, 2017:
The prices for Markets and Restaurants are way underestimated. Even the highest value showed in the "Range" column is under the average for most supermarkets.

Hi !
Steve Kincaid,sep 03-2013.
Hi is right. Stay away from Sweden. The unemployment is now 7,3, i think it is much higer. The cost of living is killing you. The pay after tax is hard to liv on. The tax is the higest in this world. Sweden was ones a good country but not now. If you looking for a flat to rent,,you will never get one. It is not eny to rent. If you would be lucky to find one you will,,i think,, not afford it.
Try to find a better country .
Good luck.
