Johnny Foreigner on Nov 16, 2021:
When applying for jobs in Donegal, you will get paid more washing dishes in a hotel than working as a care worker looking after vulnerable people. This can be seen with direct reference to job websites and phoning employers directly.
Due to the history of abuse here, it can take upto 3 months to get a care application approved due to the necessary checks to be completed. This includes references, police (garda) vetting and medical checks.
Low paid jobs are widely available in hospitality, care work and retail. These jobs are predominantly carried out by non-nationals with locals predominantly occupying professional, higher paid jobs such as local government, teachers, etc
There is little or no ethnic diversity in Donegal. In fact in the last two years, a direct provision centre was burned down before it could be used to house refugees. This is reflected on a national level where there is no ethic diversity on TV, radio or print.
Leisure time is extremely limited due to cost and lack of facilities as all investment never reaches beyond the outskirts of Dublin
You have to pay upto €60 for a GP visit then pay for GP to write a line or prescription then pay an uncapped amount on the prescription itself.
Donegal has a caste system which means big, local families dominate key positions in local government, education, etc. If you are not in this elite, then I would seriously reconsider moving here as you will be at a distinct disadvantage regardless of your qualifications. This can be seen by simple observation. It is not hidden.
I would think long and hard before moving if you don't have serious connections here
