As a U.S citizen living across from the beach,6K South of City Center in Danang, My wife and I take exception to overall total living costs on your site. The individual store item costs are generally close on this site. Appears overall expenses are skewed to the unknowing tourist (ie;rent and restraunts) My wife and I bought a quality used scooter outright at 600 USD. This is our transportation. Fuel is about 1.50 USD a week. Maintenance is insignificant with a quality Honda style cycle. No insurance needed or viable in this country. No registration or annual title fees. A newer 1 bedroom apartment with full weekly service and utilities included = Total rent 343 USD a month. Allowance for in country Health insurance 35 USD monthly for both of us. Groceries and incidentals 320 USD monthly. Occasional, 4 times a month night out including a few drinks of choice at an inexpensive local eatery, 80 USD a month. For US citizens, a quick border run via flight from Denang to Kuala Lumpur annually. Costs 200 for both flights plus hotel for 2 and 500USD for annual business Visas (U.S only). As you can see, recurring costs for a very comfortable stay outside of Denang runs us just shy of 800USD monthly. Keep in mind the annual or quarterly visa run costs and upfront motorbike costs with very inexpensive upkeep. Amazingly cheap all things considered. Across the street from a beautiful beach and next to a Golf Course. Doubt we will ever return to the states! Good hunting

Good grief, if you know where to look and have trusted local to help you, you can can very big house for 15,000,000 VND a month. The prices I see many expats happily paying are simply a rip off and those that are renting to them are laughing all the way to the bank.

A couple of things to note about these datum:

Rent Prices are rapidly increasing on an incredibly frequent basis. What may be considered as "outside the city center" is the desirable beach area where many foreigners choose to reside, thus prices there are sometimes much higher than "in the city center".

Additionally, as is the case for most of Vietnam, produce costs are lower at local markets than in supermarkets (though, they have the ability to be quite a bit higher than in supermarkets if you don't haggle).

Lastly, fruit in Da Nang is quite a bit higher than some other areas. I am told this is because the ground around here is less fertile, and more fruit is brought in. Though, just as in other parts of Vietnam, apples and oranges are not necessarily staples. I recently purchased mangoes for 31,9000/kg and dragon fruit for 29,000/kg. The former can vary in cost depending on type, and while the latter price is about average (25-40k/kg for dragon fruit), it is expensive compared to southern Vietnam where a lot of them are grown. Watermelon can be had for quite cheap (10,900/kg - though they had a special of 4,900/kg).

Some other produce prices on my recent Big C trip: 42,900/kg for capsicum/red pepper; 11,500/kg for carrots; 13,900/kg for zucchini; 29,900/kg for avocados; and 19,500/kg for papaya.

Quite a few of the prices seem little high, I assume it is based off of foreign bars and restaurants ( since pricing is collected from users which are mainly foreigners traveling ). If you buy a lot local it is quite a bit cheaper than above. specially Food and hotel bills.
