I am interested in retiring to a small to midsize town in Norway. Any suggestions? I know it is expensive to live there. Have friends who have lived there for decades. How much does a retired single person need to live comfortably in Norway?
Jack on Oct 18, 2018:
I am retired so my transportation cost are only 535 kr/month. Unlimited transportation on local bus and city trains within about a 10 mile radius of Bergen city center. Exceptionally cheap. Double that for working folk. Most of the figures posted about bergen are a little high but do reflect a fairly high level of living standard. You can find almost everything on that list fo less. I have paid 40 kr for a beer which is the lowest. 60 kr is more like the average. The exchange rat right now is just over 8 kr to 1 $. I live about 32 kilometers from city center and spend on the average of 20,000 US per month minus rent. You can find places to rent outside of Bergen for as little as 4000 kr per month. I now pay 7000 kr a month for a two bedroom flat outside the city. If you can figure out how to negotiate the site, Finn.no has everything for sale and rent but is in Norwegian. Good luck.
