Why is the crime rate soo bad?
That's unusual for a post-communist country and contrary to the comments / experiences below.

I have been to Almaty in 2020(during Corona). Go there If you have a taste for a placid city blended with trees. There is relatively no wind, In comparison with Netherland. Because the city is located between mountains.

I'll say that corruption is the main problem in Almaty. Other than this its things stolen from cars and vandalism. It's mostly the safe place to walk even at night. And I don't know any case of physical attack because of your skin color.
