I grew up in Tampa as well as being born their in 1966. The Tampa Bay area has gone through immense amounts of change since my childhood. Tampa has been constantly growing. Overall I think life in the Tampa Bay Area is quite average for an American metro. Average demographics, average wealth, average schools, average hospitals(their are some really good ones though) average infrastructure (Tampa IA is the best IA I have been in). Expanding on education Public Schools are mediocre and but noticeably better in the new areas and I will say we have a really good and cheap University USF.The Tampa Area is not poor nor rich. However their is a very large income gap in some places especially in Pinellas county. The place I would recommend to live is Riverview/Lithia area or New Tampa/Wesley Chapel. In the wider Bay Area Manatee and Sarasota counties have many and very large suburbs such as Lakewood Ranch that are really nice. I have been noticing much revival in Downtown Tampa and the West Brandon area is building up with tons of new apartments and shops. Riverview where I live has been exploding. They just built a very nice hospital in February (much needed) and have broke ground on a 14 screen theater in Riverview. Hillsborough County I would say in the past 40 years has unbelievably developed most notably the 2000's in my area(Riverview). I have lived in several places such as Dallas, Atlanta, Ft.Luaderdale and Ocala and I would say the Tampa Area is my favorite.

Not sure why so many ppl are saying there is so much crime. There are plenty of good areas that may look bad just because they're older areas. Rent is going up; two years ago a one bedroom could be around 650-750, now those same ones are closer to 900. Areas right next to USF, areas in South Tampa near Gandy & Dale Mabry, and places off Martin Luther King & Gandy (technically in Saint Pete, but very close to Tampa) are cheaper & safe!

not worth living in Tampa. Crapy place, much crime, to expensive
#glen on Oct 11, 2015 :
Food prices very high, for example, expect to pay seven to nine dollars a pound for lunch meats. Also rent prices average $1000.00 a month for decent area, any cheaper is in crime area.

the is no place for $600 per month. the one bedroom apartment is somewhere between $700 to $1200 depends on where you want to live. it is expensive to live here in Tampa Bay area you got to have a monthly income of $2000 per month or more. car insurance, cable, internet, power, and water are high around here compare to other states.

Hi:

I am living on the west coast of Puerto Rico in a town called Moca. I would like to move to Tampa, Florida and would like to know if anyone has an idea if it would be more expensive living in Tampa. I am retired and I have a good income. I would buy a house in Tampa.
Thanks.
John

I have a disposable income of around 1800 but I still pay 700 for a 1 bedroom apartment. Car insurance is around 500 for the first 6 months and then they raise it playing a bait and switch game. There are a lot of rough neighborhoods mixed in with the good ones. I'm looking to get out though so I might be biased.
#Anonymous on Jan 14, 2015 :
the cost of living is higher than expected. we moved in july to orlando andi can say food costs more and car insurance. gas is the onlything that is cheaper and buying a home.
